The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I read a while ago on This Very Wiki that Obama pwned Romney in one of their debates when Romney make an accusation towards Obama. Instead of trying to correct Romney, Obama let Romney try to back it up with facts. Does that count?

I do think it's very important to emphasize that it's not the sheer vulgarity of the language that is the sticking point here, it's the act being described. I've seen a lot of people defending Trump on the grounds that the level of vulgarity he used is common, but not that committing outright sexual assault is acceptable behavior.

If he described the act in less vulgar terms it would of been just as controversial, but he would of taken much less of a hit if he was much more vulgar but didn't brag about being able to get away with outright sexual assault.

Or to put it bluntly, I don't give a crap that he had a vulgar conversation in private 11 years ago, but I also don't believe that a man who brags about getting away with outright sexual assault (even if it's not true, though unfortunately it's almost certainly true) is not fit to be President of the United States of America, or anything else for that matter.

  • Normal man, being crude: I'd like to do some things to that woman.

  • Trump: I'm going to do some things to that woman, because I can get away with it.

[up][up] I think you over-negatived there, because that reads like you're okay with Trump doing what he did and still becoming President.

Ted Cruz is grumbling over the Trump Tapes not being released during the primaries.

That's understandable, really. If they had been released sooner, it's very possible he'd be giving Clinton serious competition right now, instead of being forced to swallow his pride and support a man who viciously insulted his family.

Cruz is blatantly ignoring that NBC has said repeatedly that it does not have access to the tapes of The Apprentice; they are held by Mark Burnett, who refuses to release them or even acknowledge requests for their release.

Well there are multiple sources right now offering to pay the fines and/or legal fees (the threat is rumored to be 5 million dollars) of anyone who leaks Apprentice material and Wa-Po has set up a secure Dropbox for those who need to remain anonymous.

Incidentaly, given that the newspapers have been mostly leading the anti-Trump crusade in the media, the last few weeks are possibly a lesson in what happens when you tick off the press and make threats to the freedom thereof. Also that a free press is a pretty good thing to have insofar as helping thwart whatever domestic designs Russia might have.

Hell hath no fury like a reporter threatened.

From what I understand, people like Beck and Kelly, while holding beliefs that I find stupid or even offensive, at least have some standards.

Guys like Hannity, on the other hand...

Anybody know if the debate is being streamed on the internet anywhere?

You can probably find it on Youtube, I'd imagine.

And if you searched any of the major networks, they'd probably be livestreaming it on their sites.

When does the debate start again? I don't want to miss it, even if I'll be forced to watch Fox's coverage.

I'm seeing (unconfirmed) reports that Mike Pence has asked to be removed from the presidential ticket.

Speaking of Hannity and Kelly, it seems he's out and out called her a Clinton supporter now. It's becoming more than a one off thing.

Only leads further credence that the election is determine which one of them sticks around...

[up][up] Interesting, if that's true.

He's already resigned as governor, right? No chance of him going back on that ticket? Because Indiana's gubernational is this year.

Pence can't just drop out. The ballots have already been printed with his name and early voting has started.

Pence can't drop out, but he can, for all intents and purposes, quit by no longer campaigning or associating. And, in the off chance the toupee wins, Pence can tender his resignation.
