Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Beary Scary: Well, Trump was dumped from The Apprentice because of his bigotry to Hispanics way back when his presidential campaign started. Trump's comments during the presidential run is the reason why he's no longer going to be host of The Apprentice. And that was NBC's doing given Burnett is still fully on the Trump train.

It is because there are legally-binding contracts which must be obliged. A better person would have pointed out these contracts and the issue of trust being the reason why the company couldn't release the videos and still denounce Trump completely.

Wizard Needs Food Badly"Every man talks like this when among other men." I used to know one guy who talked like that in high school. He actually got slapped on a regular basis because he really didn't know how to tone it down.
I'll bet these people are the same ones who would freak out if gay guys talked about them that way, but if you point that out, all they do is focus in on the "gay" part and ignore the objectification part.
In "news that probably needs to be talked about more": There are prisoner strikes going on in prisons across the country over poor conditions and the DOJ is now investigating.

Agreed. If we dismiss what Trump said as "typical guy talk" (something I would strongly disagree with given my own personal experiences) then there is something seriously wrong with "typical guy talk" in our culture.
I don't see how getting away with outright sexual assault, which is what Trump was doing, is something that we should be seen as anything less then horrifying even in the most informal of settings.

I am hardly a typical "alpha male", but I've never talked that way about any person, in public or private, in my life.

Well, to be honest, I think everyone already knew that Trump has zero class. So, this won't change many people's opinion on him.
But, to address the question: Trump reminds me of all those assholes I hated in Middle School. In any event, the president should be a strong and proper gentleman/lady-above the regular joe. Trump is vulgar and weak.

There is nothing wrong with expressing sexual attraction to someone, as long as the setting is appropriate. ("Hi, boss. I'd like to fuck you." "I'm calling HR.") What is wrong is talking about that person as if you would perform sexual acts on them without their consent.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Let me be clear... What Trump said isn't typical guy talk. In private with other men, straight men will certainly talk about how attractive women are, but it is akin to how straight women or gay men might talk about how attractive men are while in private. What Trump said is how he can use his wealth and power to control women which is far nastier than what one expects from typical guy talk.

Social media will probably merit a mention, yes. As for that quote, I think we might still need to wait a few weeks - tonight, for instance, could provide something even more damning.
I've been watching some videos of past presidential debates, and I've been wondering - do you guys think there are any particular moments - it can be as small as a single remark - that more or less won/lost a candidate the election?

Oh God! Natural light!

Here's the video in question for those of us who haven't seen it yet.
I think the top comments are very worth posting:
"This just makes him cooler in my opinion." - 124 likes
"This just makes him cooler in my opinion." - All Trump supporting man-boys everywhere." - 124 likes
"I really don't give a shit." - 114 likes
"He sounds more like a college frat boy than a presidential candidate." - 100 likes
"Every man I've ever known has talked the same way when among other men. Trump / Pence 2016." -77 likes
"This is typical guy talk. I'm not even a Donald Trump supporter." - 64 likes
"He was pretty respectfull in his trashtalk. I talk a lot more vulgar being around the boys." - 52 likes

I think the most interesting thing about the video is how seemingly courteous and composed Trump is once he steps off the bus towards the end. It stands in stark contrast to his bombastic behavior today. He also seems to have been quite thinner in 2005 as well.
