Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It may be early to be sure but the initial effect of Donald's current scandal is still pretty small among Republican voters.
A significant number of them were seemingly mollified by the non-apology apology.
Id ask what exactly they feel the idea of Rape Culture is and why they're spurning it, as it's entirely possible they believe that the idea of Rape Culture is something different from what it is and our spurning the idea based on a misconception. The same way you get people who hate Feminism because they think it's about giving women power and control over men.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranIt is the difference between "man attacks woman in the alley and rapes her" versus "Dude, just give her those drinks and she'll do whatever ya want". Guess which one those guys think it isn't rape.
Inter arma enim silent legesHoly shit, this is definitely bad for Trump in that it's definitely alienating the less crazy parts of the GOP. Reince Preibus going as far as to direct the RNC to cut off all support to Trump's campaign in favor of trying to hold the line in Congress alone is a huge deal.
Still, what happens next is gonna be interesting. But seeing the GOP tear itself in half over Trump is incredible.

In the U.S. at least, "rape culture" seems to be confusion over what rape actually is. We're taught that Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil. The problem is that a lot of people in America have a rather...narrow...definition of what counts as rape.
I won't deny that, but then, I don't think anyone here was saying it was rape.
Oh God! Natural light!
Not just women: justifying the objectifying of anybody is the first step on the "well, it's not that huge a deal" excuse train that can escalate to "well, it's OK if he did it: sports stars are randy, you know" and other "boys will be boys" excuses that can even cover those who target young boys. :|
Makes me think of Granny Weatherwax in the Discworld book Carpe Jugulum, she tells a pastor that "sin begins when you think of people as things"
The elevator pitch for rape culture goes something like
Society perpetuates ideas about sexuality and consent that contribute to an atmosphere wherein victims are reluctant to come forward and rapists might not believe they've actually raped someone. The ideas and behaviors that contribute to this are both large and small: believing that a survivor must make a physical attempt to hold off their attacker or they secretly wanted it, believing that a survivor's behavior influences whether or not a rapist will rape and treating the other sex as objects all contribute to rape culture.
Trumps comments are text book rape culture.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?

They don't understand the underlying principles of civility.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
