The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

TRUMP VS. CLINTON: MEET THE JADED YOUNG VOTERS WHO ARE STILL UNDECIDED

That applies to some states and not others, correct? So in the event of a Clinton loss, you'd have none of Clinton, Trump, or Replacement getting the 270 votes, leaving the Republican House to pick Replacement.

So technically Trump could de-facto be replaced if he stepped down without making the election too much weirder than it already is.

Not that Trump would step down. Or that Clinton failing to get 270 is likely.

There are only like two states that split their electoral college votes; in the rest, the entire state's vote goes to the winner of the popular vote in that state. So in the vast majority of cases, if the vote was split between Trump and hypothetical-GOP-replacement-candidate, then that would effectively hand the popular vote (and thus the electoral college votes) to Clinton.

[up][up] Which also explains why Trump wouldn't drop out... After all, if no one got to 270 because of the switch from Trump to a Replacement, the Republican House would obviously choose the Replacement for Trump. Trump's best path to victory is not stepping down at all.

Worth noting is that the various state laws assigning how electors pledge their votes have never been tested against the Constitution, which says only that the electors shall assemble and vote, not that they must vote for the candidate or party determined by the outcome of their state's election. I am not saying that we are likely to have faithless electors this year, just that there is no fundamental, Constitutional reason why an elector pledged to Trump would have to cast their vote for him.

I don't see Trump magically discovering composure on the stage tomorrow. What I do foresee is a lot of interest directed at this latest news, which should drown out (at long last) the incessant "emails, Benghazi" stupidity. There's also the chance that he might walk entirely — not do the debate.

Heck, I've given serious thought to suggesting that Hillary walk out, as a protest against Trump being a candidate at all.

Naturally, Paul Ryan would be called a "cuck" for withdrawing his support of Trump. Plus bonus homophobia and implied death threat!

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot

Speaking of Trump, I saw something I never expected today: a guy campaigning for Trump. Note that this is in one of the most liberal districts in California. I guess if you think about it, there will always be at least a few people supporting any side, but I can't imagine what he hopes to accomplish, unless he's trying to get people to donate and phone bank or something.

I think that Hillary should show up at the debate. It would show that she's not scared of debating Trump, and would debate him without lowering herself to his subterranean level.

I hope that the debate tomorrow is a verbal massacre.

Do not obey in advance.

I don't know, since he was still setting up when I left, but it's hard to imagine him as a preacher.

Also notable is that he did not appear white.

The amount of "boys will be boys" I've seen going around in the wake of Trump's sexual assault comments is starting to get quite frankly sickening.

That's gotta be one of the worst things about this whole election for me, personally. To see how many terrible people you live with and how many bridges you gotta burn.

I want to do a study assessing the correlation between people who've played the "well, boys will be boys" card in response to all this and people who think that Rape Culture is a myth perpetuated by feminists and other SJW-types.

Honestly the only group of men defending it as locker room talk are just male Trump supporters.

And we all know they are, for a lack of a better term, socially challenged beyond belief.

RE Republican politicians voting for Clinton: So... Does this mean the Republican leadership will have to show that it was serious about its threats of punishing Republican politicans that refuse to endorse Trump as the party's candidate? Because publicly announcing their intent to vote for Clinton is the same as saying that they refuse to endorse Trump, AFAIK.

No, it just says a lot about how seriously they take the issue and widespread it is.

Which just makes me doubt that they well and truly care.

What I find interesting about Trump's campaign thus far is that he's basically adopted Caustic Critic as his persona. It's like if Yahtzee, the Nostalgia Critic, or the Cinema Sins guy was running for President in-character. And was also a racist pumpkin, but you get my point. "Belligerent, angry, charismatic douchebag making zippy one-liners" is basically his entire shtick.

Appropriately, he's losing voters in a way that feels very familiar for fans of Caustic Critic comedy. It's not that people are waking up and learning to recognize that Trump is full of hateful rhetoric. When he drives people away, it's more along the lines of He Panned It Now He Sucks. They were fine with the hateful rhetoric when it was a reflection of their opinions. Then, suddenly,

"I used to think he was awesome but then he was mean to a thing I LIKE! Now I hate him forever!"
