Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It may be too late for the Republicans to field a replacement candidate.

Keep Rolling OnThis is the only Victory Fund
I could find, but it's probably not the one Tactical Fox is talking about.
Trump actually issued a better apology. And I'd say this one is genuinely clever. "I've said stupid shit, I regret it, it was wrong, believe in me. Also, Bill Clinton actually went further than words and abused women, and Hillary character-assassinated her husband's victims."
"Anyone who knows me knows these words don't reflect who I am. I said it, I was wrong and I apologize. I’ve traveled the country talking about change for America, but my travels have also changed me. I've spent time with grieving mothers who have lost their children, laid-off workers whose jobs have gone to other countries, and people from all walks of life who just want a better future.
"I have gotten to know the great people of our country, and I've been humbled by the faith they've placed in me. I pledge to be a better man tomorrow and will never, ever let you down.
"Let's be honest: We're living in the real world. This is nothing more than a distraction from the important issues we're facing today. We are losing our jobs, we're less safe than we were eight years ago, and Washington is totally broken.
"Hillary Clinton and her kind have run our country into the ground. I've said some foolish things, but there's a big difference between the words and actions of other people. Bill Clinton has actually abused women, and Hillary has bullied, attacked, shamed and intimidated his victims. We will discuss this more in the coming days.
"See you at the debate on Sunday."
But I'm not seeing any reports of the RNC cutting him off.
The growing list of Republicans who have abandoned Donald Trump
Didn't See That Coming. Very elegant.
Among the topics Trump discussed: his daughter Ivanka's physique, having sex with women on their menstrual cycles, threesomes, and checking out of a relationship with women after they turn 35.
Trump's long track record of making misogynistic comments and engaging in lewd conversations about sex took on a new and much darker tone on Friday night, when the "Washington Post" published audio of Trump, caught on a hot mic in 2005, bragging about how women let him do whatever he wants to them because he's a celebrity.
While Trump's comments — in which he describes forcing himself upon women — stand apart from anything he has said in the past, Trump has long engaged in sexually explicit banter over the years, particularly on Stern. Trump appeared on Stern's radio program for decades, and while many of his appearances have been reported on, K File's review has turned up previously unreported examples of Trump engaging in crude conversations.
Media smells blood and they're going to get it.
New Survey coming this weekend!I'm actually not happy at all about this. It's so viscerally disturbing that a person like Trump could even seek the nomination, let alone win it and contend realistically for the office of President. Don't get me wrong; this will hand the election to Clinton on a platter, but it is not how I wanted to see that happen.
Paradoxically, it may not have the desired and necessary effect of discrediting Republican ideology. Rather, it'll become about their choice of candidate, and the ideological battle will merely be postponed another four years.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The problem is that people have been saying "this scandal/gaffe/mistake will sink him for sure!" since the beginning of the primary, and nothing stuck to him yet. I'd like to think that this one is different, but I have no real reason to believe it. We'll have to see how this plays out in the debate and the next round of polls.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Yeah, as damning as this seems, a lot of things have seemed pretty damning to Mango Mussolini, but given two or three weeks, Teflon Don's slipped out of things that should have sunk any normal candidate and rebounded in the polls to where he was before his previous "campaign-ending" scandal.
We'll have to see if voters are goldfish or if people are still outraged about this (and/or his past douchebaggery) in four weeks.

It's not about how the public reacts, but the GOP apparatus itself. Up until now, they've been sticking doggedly with their party's candidate no matter how odious he was out of a sense of solidarity, but it's fracturing messily at the moment.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The tension in my house is foolish over this damn election.
It makes me question voting at all, just because my parents and siblings are complete idiots regarding politics, and I live in the reddest possible state. My vote will not affect anything when it comes to the presidential race. I am tempted to vote in the local elections and just leave the presidential vote blank so that I won't face further damn nonsense from my parents.
Well Trump's crowds might still be a problem.
Vote anyway. Many places that are normally strong red states are threatening to flip.

I too am worried that this gives Republicans an easy out during the next election cycle. Now it'll be harder to associate the GOP with Trump's deplorability, because if anyone brings it up, they can say, "Look, I stood against Trump in the end." They're trying to save themselves at the last minute by leaving a sinking ship.
That's right, boys. Mondo cool.

RNC just halted Trump from having access to the Victory Fund.
Shit just got real.
Hillary has won.
The only question that remains is what will Congress looks like.
New Survey coming this weekend!
