Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

And someone else pointed out that we're WORKING WITH THEM TO SOLVE THE ISSUE. They even provided a handy link to an article talking about that specific subject. Did you not read it? I'll repost it for you.

And seriously, even Mexico has refused to help, we have literally nothing to gain from the boondoggle of actually making such a thing. It's not a solution, and doing it just to feel like we're doing something helpful will waste everyone's time.
Sounds just like your decision making when it comes to making a rebuttal based on actual understandings instead of catchy soundbites.
David Letterman doesn't think much of what the campaign has revealed of Trump
.
My only caveat is his choice of calling Trump a "damaged human being".
To me, that implies that Trump is some sort of victim and his actions are rooted in some sort of trauma or whatever.
I'm pretty sure Trump doesn't have any sort of mental disorder or anything, except maybe being a low-functioning sociopath.
When said guns are points refuted a thousand times, yes they aren't.

Affluenza, probably. Funny how nobody seemed to notice that under the gold leaf was someone lesser than his father in nearly every quality outside ostentatiousness.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotFrom my small experience with Utah culture this is pretty understandable.
They may have some fucked up political views but they put a lot of value on basic decency. To be quite frank I'm not sure why he tolerated Trump this long. Maybe he was trying in his own twisted way to make some sort of pragmatic political compromise for his horrible idea of the greater good, but then this came out and it was basically impossible to ignore.
I'm assuming he for whatever reason was not familiar with the long list of horrible misogynistic things Trump has said and done prior to this point.

Look man, there's sticking to your guns, and there's continuing to pull the trigger of your gun even when it isn't loaded and has jammed repeatedly.
Oh God! Natural light!
X5 They'd need to pass a constitutional amendment, while I don't know the exact makeup of the Mexican parliment I'd estimate that it has enough hyper-nationalist and far-left anti-imperialist in it that such an amendment would never pass, even with goverment support.
Hmm? The FBI are federal police, the CIA are an intelligence agency and not law enforcement even though they are civilians.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranAnd we've got ourselves a conspiracy theory spouting Trump supporter. Newsflash to the new guy—Benghazi wasn't a thing. The emails aren't a thing. Whitewater wasn't a thing. Vince Foster? Suicide. Etc, etc.
The so-called Clinton "scandals" are just so much hot air blown around by the likes of Newt Gingrich. When you've got something real to talk about, let us know.
@Krieger
The troll's not going to care about that, I expect. After all other countries should just change their laws to reflect American interests. Then again, given who he supports I suppose we should be glad he "only" wants a wall, and not a Pinochet style case of "regime change" to enforce American policy.
The CIA cannot infringe on the FBI's backyard. In other words, they cannot perform intelligence gathering in any form within the United States.
Also, they have no law enforcement abilities or agents
. They may have employees that were former law enforcement or work with law enforcement, but they are not law enforcement.
Mexico is not under any obligation to accept full military support, and if they're cooperating with other American agencies it doesn't seem like they have to.
And I have to ask, do you really think the wall will stop anyone? Really, truly? It's already been pointed out that the wall is ineffective for the purposes of keeping out illegal drug traders. They've already got ways around all that kind of thing, and they'd just get better at it if the wall was actually built. Gotta say, you're not even making an effort to prove the idea is a good one.
@Zesty, I agree our government should accept the help, but as I've said before (I don't think you were around back then), it'd be political suicide for the person who suggested it and for his or her party. Sadly, Mexicans tend to hold grudges for a long time and a lot of people distrust the US because of our shared history.
Considering how messed up our political system has become (our biggest party is at an all time low because our president is stupid, our conservatives are hated by the progressive youth and our pseudo-Chavista left is insane), no politician is willing to take such a risk.
Still, our own stupidity doesn't make the wall a good idea all of sudden. That's like cutting off your arm because it was itchy.

X5 Sure they're federal but they're neither a military or law enforcement, it's a loophole, they should be forbidden but they're not, so the US and Mexican governments are using the loophole.
But yes the CIA operate boots on the ground, they're like that, so what? You seem to be totally ignoring that there are laws involved here and not just a gut feeling of "well we should send our guys in/well they're letting us send some guys in so why not others?"
Edit: Awww, Why'd you have to ruin my fun Fighteer?

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"So it looks to me like this new video is either the last straw or a convenient excuse to jump off the Trump train for a lot of republicans. That's encouraging.
I'm actually glad they don't see to going over to Hillary, though. It gives me the impression they're more interested in getting the GOP back on the rails, which is something that needs to happen.
I realize that now is probably not the best time, but just a small question since I'm reading up on the email thing:
Would you consider "It wasn't a good idea by Clinton but the media is blowing it severely out of proportion because they hate Clinton" an accurate assessment of the situation or not? Because what I'm reading seems to indicate that she was just trying to do her job, yes, but she was also being a little careless.
And they're gone. Ah well.
New topic: anyone have a guess on how those recordings will impact Trump in the polls? I just saw a brief report that he's apparently apologized - more information is coming.
You mean the emails? Well, she admitted it was a mistake and apologized for it, so yeah, I do think that's an accurate assessment.

Oh God! Natural light! At least one major figure has already publicly withdrawn his support. Governor of Utah or something. And hell, apparently Mitch Mc Connell has demanded an apology of him.
So... well, maybe it won't hurt him among the voter base, but it's certainly had an effect in the party itself.

@Kreiger: Quite frankly, that's irrelevant and not really out business. They don't need to prove anything of the sort, as it doesn't really factor into their argument all that much.
