Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

For the record- I kind of identify as Republican more than Democrat.
The issue is that the Republican party is ass backwards and falling apart, and it's hard to say "oh yeah i am a republican" when everything the party is doing right now is actively detrimental to the US- especially in regards to LGBT rights.
And to be clear- Trump is a terrible individual and shouldn't be anywhere near the seat of presidency.
Anyway, right now I'm fairly certain Zesty is a troll since he's yet to actually have a decent response to criticisms against Trump and it seems like everything he's said has been to rile people up.

"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-Mae@Jetyl: Frankly, there's so many people around saying similar things who are trolls and so many that are sick of them that it's a stretch to assume "maybe this guy is different", especially when he trots out crap about safe spaces I don't even think most liberals believe. (Says one of the resident not-a-Democrat-nor-Republican people.)
He started his campaign by stating that all Mexicans were criminals and racists, and has a long history of racism in his business. His mealy-mouthed "And some, I assume, are good people" does not save him from the incredibly racist tones of what he said. He claimed a judge shouldn't continue presiding over a court case he's in because the guy is Mexican. We're not pulling this shit out of thin air, we're getting this from what he's said and done. Such as not turning down the endorsements from the KKK, which is pretty damning for anyone.
We're claiming a thing because he is. if you want to claim he's not, then maybe you should go to the trouble to find and present proof he's not.
@Tactical: Does Russia still even talk to Cuba? I was sort of under the impression that Cuba had fallen into unimportance on the international scale.

It's not just minorities that Trump doesn't care for either. He has a long history of saying extremely disrespectful things to women entirely because of their gender.
He doesn't really respect anyone or anything but himself. Not exactly a man you want to trust with the White House.
Compared to the stupid and frankly cruel things Trump does on the regular it's pretty disconcerting that the media is hounding on that so much.
You're basically engaging in "whataboutism" here.

You want solutions?
Legalize everything? Not quite, but making cocaine and pot legal should reduce the power and influence of cartels and gangs by a whole lot.
Stop incarceration for possession, it mainly target minorities and poor people sending them to a poverty trap due to serving a sentence and having a criminal record making people unemployable. As well putting people who are minor offenders in an environment that will surely turn them into full fledged criminals.
Focus instead in rehabilitation and medical aid for addicts and chemical dependents, including providing vocational training along the dependency treatment. Which beats by a long shot incarcerating people for possession and it becomes cheaper in the long term thanks to the voided costs with the prison system and associated issues with criminality.
Take the money from the taxation and regulation of the drug commerce and use it to fund the rehabilitation programs.
Focus on community police and retrain the police forces to work with the community instead of showing up only to make arrests, including putting more red tape on the use of deadly force, ending the use racial profiling and end the covering up of LE Os who abuse their authority.

Inter arma enim silent legesThe stuff in the emails was either not confidential at the time, or made confidential by mistake. She did nothing that every other secretary of state hadn't done, and the FBI investigation concluded that there was no wrong doing.
It's also a bit rich that you claim your original point was something you've never mentioned before.

X5 She did something illegal with emails? First I'm hearing of it.
On the Cuba bases, meh, not like they can do anything with them, plus the US has bases just as close to Russia as Cuba is to the US doesn't it?

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranOne, what she did wasn't actually illegal. Two, Colin Powell and various others in places of importance did the same damn thing, and Powell even made recommendations to her on the issue. Three, a lot of those things appear to be classified after the fact. Four; the technology provided to her was massively out of fucking date because a Republican controlled Congress hasn't approved a budget to update literally everyone's out of date shit.
Just for the record, when cartels do smuggle drugs through the border, they usually do it through the tunnels they have all along the border including the parts that are already walled-off and with a ton of security.
Of course the cartels use any possible way to smuggle drugs into the US and weapons into Mexico, not just the tunnels. So, the wall would only stop the smaller smugglers, the ones who use their cars, pets, babies and their own anuses to smuggle small amounts of drug over the border. And maybe not even that. I'm sure some (or many) would still be able to cross because it'd be the same as these days: light-skinned Mexicans (or even White Americans) who cross legally and are good at hiding the illegal stuff they're smuggling one way or another.
Also, most of the so-called "mojados", the ones who enter the US illegally by crossing the Río Bravo or through the less secure parts near the Sonora desert, come from other countries, not necessarily Mexico. A great percentage of the Mexicans who end up illegally in the US, entered the country legally, by getting a work, student or tourist Visa and then overstaying their welcome.
Finally, sometimes the Mexican government prefers to look the other way when it comes to Central American immigrants because it's more expensive to try to keep them here. Considering they don't want to end up here, CA migrants tend to be a pain in the butt even when they don't end up as criminals.
I agree that something needs to be done to solve the migrant crisis (which by the way, also affects our country), but a wall is just a stupid idea. Not only will it not work, it'll strain relations between the US and Mexico, and though the US might not get much from this friendship, we're still allies and there's more to gain (or less to lose) if both countries work to keep it that way.
@Tactical: Russia can announce it wants to put bases in Cuba all it wants but Cuba has been in the process of loosening government controls and making nice with the US again, remember? This is no longer really Castro's Cuba (although I think he's still alive and ranting about it) and they might not be so eager to have Russia back.
Not sure about Vietnam but they're more in China's circle. They've been going through much the same "we need to embrace capitalism and open to globalization in order to survive" cycle.

You also seem to be ignoring the points made that a wall isn't going to be an effective solution in curbing the drug trade.
