Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It said the storm killed over 100 people in Haiti. We're not looking at potential death toll high enough to affect the election.
Frankly, I find the 'natural selection' viewpoint to be very off-putting. These are people who've been brainwashed by bias media, angry at the system because things are falling apart, and then taken in by a con man. They are victims. Victims of Trump, but more relevantly, soon-to-be victims of a hurricane.
Don't cheer at Trump supporters getting themselves killed. Be horrified that right-wing media is so depraved that it would encourage their listeners to get themselves killed rather than admit that Obama did even the slightest thing right, even if the thing he did 'right' was just the obvious response.
Obama does nothing: Why did the president do nothing to prevent this disaster?
Obama does something: Liberal conspiracy!
Guy just can't win.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?I don't usually make pleas like this, but just...please. People have already died in this storm, and it's almost certain that more will follow. It's true that some of the people in harm's way have beliefs that I and many others here find abhorrent, but that doesn't mean I would want them to die.
I mean, my family are friends with a family who are in Florida right now, and I know they're pretty conservative, with at least one of them planning on voting for Trump (although he seems more reluctant about it than others, from what my dad told me). Sure, I heavily disagree with them on a lot of things, but that doesn't I want any of them to lose family members, or God forbid they all die. Thankfully, I believe they're out of harm's way, but I'm still worried.
If someone who was more conservative than is the norm for this thread poked their head in here and saw people saying that we should be glad that these people die, what would they think of us? The last thing I want any of us to resemble are people like that woman in that article who wanted Obama shot or whatever she said.
Anyway, sorry about all of that. I just needed to get that off my chest.

Oh God! Natural light! So apparently the hurricane's wind speed is now "only" 130 mph.
https://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/atlantic/2016/Hurricane-Matthew
Making it a Category 3. I guess that's good news? Or at least it's somewhat less awful news.
Disgusted, but not surprisedWell, going from the storm in the South to the bastard in the North (this is close to be a ASOIAF reference, isn't it?):
Any Maine tropers here - my condolences, I had no idea.
Seriously, this guy makes Trump look subtle.
Oh God! Natural light! It's worth keeping a sense of perspective, here. The 130 MPH winds thing is only in the eye wall in the very center of the storm — the vast, vast majority of people won't see that. Depending on how far it stays off shore, it's possible that no one will see that.
That said, this is still a serious storm, and people in vulnerable situations (which basically means people right on the shore who may be hit by the storm surge note and people in mobile homes, RVs, and the like) need to evacuate. I'm in Orange County (~30 miles inland) and there's a hurricane warningnote for the entire county. There's a curfew from 10:00 PM today through 7:00 AM Saturday. We may or may not lose power.
The coastal counties have it worse — they have storm surge to deal with, and they're closer to the center of the storm, so they have higher winds to worry about too.
The major problem with Matthew is that it's forecast to ride right up the coast from Miami to South Carolina, which means like five hundred miles of coast have hurricane conditions to deal with. That means a whole hell of a lot of people are having to evacuate, will have storm surge damage, power outage, etc. Hurricanes usually make landfall and lose strength quickly, but because this one is close enough to land to cause serious damage while being close enough to water to maintain strength, it's going to be a huge damage area.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.
Basically that, yes. Direct storm fatalities — if there are any — are almost certainly going to be people who should have evacuated but refused to, or waited too late to leave safely and got caught by the storm while trying to get out. But there's going to be a lot of people without power for several days at least, and depending on how things turn out, we might see a lot of damage on the coast. Mobile homes and the like getting shredded is basically a given, but if the eye wall makes landfall while it's still a category 4 storm, then it's going to destroy regular houses and seriously damage larger buildings as well. It may take out things like bridges to barrier islands and the like.
Bringing things back into politics, is anyone else wondering if the same GOP Congresspeople who voted against Hurricane Katrina aid only to beg for help after Louisiana was flooded are going to vote against more aid after this hurricane?

Disgusted, but not surprisedSo, those Russian hacks? Some of the data they took was altered before they released it
. This specific story involves the World Anti-Doping Agency stuff hacked and released in response to the scandal involving Russian athletes in the Rio Olympics, and the hack of the Democratic National Convention, but not the Clinton Foundation or other recent leaks.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Voters prefer Trump on Economy and Clinton on everything else.
Interesting, if bewildering on the first part.

It makes sense if you think about it don't think about it too hard. Donald Trump is a businessman. Obviously, he knows how to run a business. So as long as Trump runs the country like he runs his business, then he'll be able to run the country. Nevermind that Donald has only run most of his businesses into the ground at on point or another, but the sad fact is, many people don't know about how Donald's actually run his businesses because they can't be bothered to dig beneath the surface. As far as they're concerned, Donald Trump is a financial genius who can do no wrong.

Ace Of Spades, the post that got thumped wasn't my first on the topic. It was in reference to a response to my first post, that the ideal would be to hook a politician up to a device that electrocutes them every time they lie.
That, I assume, was a joke. The thumped post made reference to the Aztec(if you want to lead, you must bleed) and Persian Empire(truth is the highest value)) "electoral" processes. That, I assure you, was a joke, a joke I definitely did not feel undignified making.
What you are failing to acknowledge, why this topic I'd be fine dropping at this point otherwise. Is that the presidential debate used to be hosted and sponsored by a non governmental, non partisan, non profit group before the suits and politicians, once again, high jacked something the working women started up for themselves for their own benefit. And it shows in the quality of the post Reagan debates. My points incoherent? Perhaps, that's to be expected when you miss the start...
...okay, the start was Kaine or more likely a Kaine robot asking me for money that somehow related to his involvement in something I despise but if the league of women voters kept handling there would be one less thing to direct towards my spam folder. And what, the people, the voters, misunderstand the purpose of the presidential debate? We're(or rather, our predecessors) are the reason politicians got to have televised presidential debates in the first place. I realize I wouldn't get my way exactly, because most people don't have it in for politicians like I do, but they'd be better back in the control of the League Of Women voters or some similar group. The league never asked to relinquish, never lost the ability (it's once every four years, not a huge demand), ratings and ego simply lead to the metaphorical masturbation we see today.
It's bad enough climate change wasn't the first topic discussed. Believe what you want about it, it's happening and what measures to take about it are important. Slightly unrelated, bees are dying. Butterflies are dying. The two corporations most responsible for what could very easily lead to collapase of our food system as we know it, are trying to merge! What's antitrust law again? Pharmaceutical companies lobbied for the ban of vitamin sales this year. Most of our mass produced food is as healthy as mushroom hunting and we almost saw the one, simple, relatively affordable offset taken away. There are so many issues that should be front and center that are after thoughts, we see what is brought up lied about, and I think on a time voters could vote on the questions asked with a decent chance of follow through, so I personally resent it even more. I don't know exactly what everyone's problem with the debates are but there was a time we'd be in slightly better position to do something about it.
And no, even at my least serious I never suggested a candidate, say Hillary Clinton to Donald Trump, could just say he's a liar and that's all we need to know. If politicians could win races that way she'd have been president for the last eight years...or at least have won the Democrat's nomination in 2008. What I'm saying is it'd be nice if we, the voters, could say when politicians decline from a more strictly regulated, no pampering but slightly hostile debate process that they are liars we don't need to hear any more from.
Buldogue's lawyer

I don't know if people who buy into such conspiracy theories are white supremacists - for all I know, some of they could be.
But I swear to God, if people die in a fucking hurricane because of this guy...
I mean, I'm not just thinking about adults here - what about any kids they might have?
