Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

And Lester Holt did do that for some of Trump's bigger whoppers and Anderson Cooper probably will too if his reputation is anything to go by. (I don't know anything about the Fox guy I haven't already mentioned.)
Re, the Wa-Po article above: For her, it started with blaming Clinton because he was in power at the time stuff started going to shit for her. One of the things I've had to keep reminding my mom is that whoever's in the Oval office doesn't really have any control over a normal person's day to day suck with jobs, etc.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI wonder if part of the reason Republicans oppose increases in mental healthcare is because some (emphasise some here) of their support comes from people with untreated mental illnesses buying into the paranoid delusions offered up by the Republican Party.
I'm pretty sure it's not that Machiavellian and is just due to a hatred of "Socialism" and "goverment spending" but it's a thought.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranTrump has an interesting way of trying to win over the terminally ill vote.
"I don't care how sick you are," the Republican nominee said. "I don't care if you just came back from the doctor and he gave you the worst possible prognosis, meaning it's over. Doesn't matter. Hang out till November 8. Get out and vote."

Congress was fighting for months to get emergency funding for Zika through because of the various poison pills that kept getting attached (it finally got through with the general budget bill to keep the government open). The question may not be "will someone try to play polticis with the emergency relief" and more "who will they succeed in pinning the blame on for it?" (The Republican governor tried to frame the Dems voting against the version with the Planned Parenthood poison pill as them being obstructionist, not the GOP. I think the Dems tried to counter with something about banning the display of confederate flags in military cemetaries.)

Something nice for a change of pace: The Obama Family have taken steps to preserve Michelle's vegetable garden
including more permanent structures, a deal with the National Park Service to maintain it and a private endowment from a seed company to fund it.
It's still up to future occupants whether to keep it (as the White House is their house for the duration of the term) but it will be hard for them to raze it without creating a fuss and ticking people off. (It's become one of the symbols of the local food movement for one thing.)

I'm hoping this is appropriate for the US Politics Thread, because this does involve US politics, albeit in a different way.
I'm part of a group of Tropers that watches and riffs on movies
every day (8 PM EST). Several times, the movies we watched were political. One was Arlington Road, about a man who thinks a neighbor of his might be a terrorist, and tries to stop said neighbor. Another time, we watched a satire about a Trump-esque candidate running for president, except it was made in the 90s - rather ahead of its time!
Tonight, we're watching a movie about a fictional nuclear conflict between the US and Russia (amusingly released 18 months before the end of the Cold War), and it's titled By Dawn's Early Light.
It's themed around US political fears of the past, and I'm not sure how much it would focus on the geopolitics versus other aspects of what's going on, but I figured that people here might find it interesting. I only wish I'd posted when we were watching the other two political movies, as I think they (especially the one about the Trump-esque candidate) would be even more appropriate.
I apologize if this is too off-topic. I'm hoping it's appropriate due to the theme. If you want to chat about it more, it might be appropriate to do so on its own thread
so we don't derail this one with Cold War talk, etc.
I think you'd have to bring in some mention of the actual politics for it to be topical here since just saying you watched the movie doesn't give much of a point for discussion to latch onto. (But announcing that it's happening for anyone interested is probably ok.)

You know, you did make me think about one thing though, Arlington Road is political in a most unexpected way. Made before the 9/11 attacks, it basically is a tinfoil hatter's dream. The main character is framed for a terrorist attack by the terrorists who knew he'd try to warn their target about an attempt to bomb them, so the terrorists snuck the bomb into his car to go off when he tried to warn the target.
Right after that, it shows a montage of TV news reports talking about how the man was "acting strange" and "becoming obsessed" before the attack, and we see that they've already created an "official story" around him.
My dad told me about this movie during the time I was actually going through my conspiracy nut phase, whereas he wasn't going through one, and it just reinforced my worldview of patsies and fake attacks and so on.

He considers his focus on "domestic issues" a strength of his candidacy. Yes.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"He tried to claim that ignorance of geopolitics was a good thing. Which would have had more credence if he had said that immediately after his gaffes instead of the week after. Making it look like he was fumbling for an excuse.
And let's not forget that this guy who supposedly doesn't know much about the rest of the world is in favor of the TPP. A free trade agreement that involves other countries.
And some of his backers have ties to the Koch brothers.
He's dumb or corrupt or both.

The Kochs have had "libertarian" leanings (more like Objectivist, but whatever) for ages; they decided Trump was a sicko a while back so I guess they're tossing some crumbs Johnson's way just in case he scrapes out enough votes to disrupt the election.

The Mormons have their questionable sides, but, overall, they're a truly respectable community.
