Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Hold the phone...

Donald Trump is doing worse among white voters than Romney did. To makes things even better, the trends are going against him. And his core demographics aren't registering to vote.

http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/trumps-doing-worse-than-romney-did-among-white-voters/

If Trump's losing grounds with white voters, AND many of his followers aren't even registered to vote, he's pretty much done, isn't he?

it's almost like him becoming the republican candidate had more to do with fearmongering and the lack of an actually good candidate and less with the american people actually believing in his ideologies.

but yeah, it's seems like Trump is unlikely to pull a victory. Yes, he has some dedicated followers, but polls have been showing that Trump is losing traction. No to mention the revelation that a lot of the polls might have been hijacked towards Trump's favor anyway.

So Trump only barely gets a majority of white voters, who likely be statistically less significant than the last election. Meanwhile Hilary is losing some young and minority voters to the assorted third parties.

I wonder which, if either, is more likely to reverse.

President George W. Bush appeared, along with his wife Laura Bush and Elizabeth Warren, in a video with the cast of Hamilton and its related documentary encouraging citizens to vote.

The video doesn't actually say who to vote for, but the director and cast of Hamilton are outspoken Democrats, W. Bush has not spoken up for Trump, and I think we all know where Warren stands.

I remember hearing Bush was going to vote Clinton, but got sure it was fully confirmed.

The House of Bush stays together. At the very least the majority won't vote Trump.

Donald Trump is tearing the NFL apart

Four weeks into the NFL season and four weeks from Election Day, amid an increasingly politicized league confronting on-field protests every Sunday, a straw poll of 43 players by B/R Mag shows:

  • 20 of 22 black NFL players plan to vote for Hillary Clinton.
  • 2 of 22 black NFL players plan to vote for Donald J. Trump.
  • 21 of 21 white NFL players plan to vote for Trump.

Woody explained that white players were hesitant to talk about Trump because “a white player may parrot something Trump says, and the black player may think, ‘Oh, that’s how you feel?’ And it could cause problems.”

Those problems are already unfolding across the NFL. In mid-May, as Trump became the presumptive nominee, two NFC teammates—a right-leaning offensive lineman and a left-leaning linebacker—began to re-examine their friendship because of Trump.

They had known each other for four years. Their wives talked on occasion. Their kids sometimes played together. They sat next to each other in team meetings and went to dinner several times per month. They often joked that politics were off-limits because of their disparate viewpoints. Then, after their first offseason team workout in May, the lineman revealed he would be voting for Trump—and everything changed.

The linebacker, a Clinton supporter, began finding excuses for not going to dinner. The families stopped talking. When the lineman confronted his now former friend, he recalls receiving a blunt response: I can’t be friends with anyone who would vote for Donald Trump. I’m sorry.

It might surprise you, with dozens of players following Kaepernick’s lead in silent protest against the national anthem, but many NFL teams lean conservative. At least 40 to 50 percent of the league, by some players’ estimates, believes Republicans do more to eradicate higher taxes, thus protecting more of their earnings.

I mean, they're not wrong. Republicans are all about eliminating taxes for the rich and pushing the burden onto the working class.

They should do the same poll in the WNBA.

Although I would be curious to know about the NBA, as more and more players have spoken against police violence, LeBron James among them (so it's hard to claim that "he did it because he wanted the spotlights").

From what I gathered, Trump has the support of Dennis Rodman. Clinton has Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson (♥), Jason Kidd and, to the surprise of absolutely no one, Jason Collins, the first NBA player who made his coming-out.

And I somehow doubt Trump will get D-Wade's voice considering his comments after Wade's cousin got shot.

Also, isn't the MLB heavily latino? I wonder how Trump fares there.

http://www.dailynewsbin.com/news/cnn-msnbc-fox-news-donald-trump-president-obama/26201/

CNN, MSNBC, Fox News all cut off Donald Trump after just 5 minutes to cover President Obama instead
There was a time when cable news networks couldn’t get enough of Donald Trump and his rambling speeches at his campaign rallies, airing them from start to finish on a near daily basis in the hope of milking it for ratings from all sides. Those who were horrified by him and those who were mesmerized by him were both counted on to remain glued to his every speech. But now that Trump has gone further off the deep end, and the American mainstream appears to have simply had enough, cable news has shifted accordingly. In fact, all three major networks dumped Trump within the first five minutes of his speech in favor of President Obama.

Trump took the stage at a campaign rally on Wednesday at 3:17pm eastern time and began claiming that his running mate Mike Pence had the greatest performance in the history of VP debates, before quickly pivoting into a semi-coherent ramble about President Obama’s Iran deal. Trump’s lies about the deal were so blatant, and so unhinged, that CNN had cut away by 3:20pm – just three minutes after it began. Rather than shifting to any breaking news, CNN aired an interview with the director of a Broadway play.

Within five minutes of the start of Donald Trump’s speech, MSNBC and Fox News had also cut away from him to air an impromptu speech from President Obama starting at 3:30pm. The President gave a very brief statement announcing a new milestone in his Paris climate change accords, which was over in less than five minutes.

It’s not clear whether President Obama timed his brief statement specifically to preempt Donald Trump’s rally speech, nor is it clear whether all three cable news networks would have cut of Trump even if Obama hadn’t been speaking. But when the President finished his statement, Trump was still speaking at his rally – and none of the three networks went back to airing it.

As satisfying as that is... it's kind of coming too late. It would've shut him down during the primaries, but as things stand, what hurts him are reminders of how terrible he is. The less Trump shows up now, the more it sells the narrative Pence tried to make yesterday; the 'normal republican' Trump.

Though it does mean that Fox is less likely to favour him in the last debate.

@Football players vote Republican because of money: They do realize that by admitting this they're effectively saying that their personal wealth is more important than the well being of others right?

Well, voting with your wallet is apparently a thing most people are thought to do. But even without that, I don't find it particularly surprising football players, or the white ones, anyway, lean conservative.

I mean, regardless of whether or not you think it's accurate you'd have to be living under a rock to not realize that's how people would take such a statement.

Voting for a party that looks out for your financial interests isn't wrong per se. That's what poor people on welfare do after all. The issue is more that the Republican party is actively threatening the safety and civil rights of anyone that isn't a straight white male. By saying "I'm voting for them because they'll cut my taxes" you're essentially saying your money is more important than other people's lives.

edit: You can have that opinion if you want but be prepared for people, particularly minorities, to feel uncomfortable around you.

Eh, that's been implicit for a lot longer than this election. Well, unless the people voting like that just don't think about it, which I'm sure a lot of them don't.
