Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@The Handle: That describes my dad, so it's still somewhat accurate.
A minority of Americans perceive that the best available scientific evidence is driving climate research findings most of the time. And a roughly equal share says other, more negative, factors influence climate research.
People’s trust and confidence in climate scientists varies widely depending on their political orientation. Liberal Democrats are much more trusting of climate scientists’ understanding of the issue and disclosure of full and accurate information about it. Republicans, particularly conservatives, are highly critical of climate scientists and more likely to ascribe negative rather than positive motives to the influences shaping scientists’ research.
We're fucked aren't we?
New Survey coming this weekend!Most of Trump's supporters are really angry about something. It could be blacks getting welfare, Hispanics taking jobs, Muslims killing Americans, the existence of non-Christians, LGBT rights, the "PC police", gun control, poor wages, expensive education, intellectuals bossing them around, being called ignorant, being called racist/sexist, jobs going overseas, the idea of a woman being President, multiculturalism, Democrats in general, women having sexual rights, having to wear seat belts, not being allowed to drink and drive, cybersecurity, Jews, not being allowed to screw kids, you name it.
Trump gives these people an outlet — a safe space to lash out in, to express their anger. Angry people with computer skills will attempt to hack whatever the target of their anger is. Sometimes they succeed.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Many are, certainly. But they aren't his only supporters. Spend five minutes on Twitter, Reddit, 4Chan, etc. and you'll see people eagerly applauding the exact same attitudes he constantly espouses. It's easy to forget that we're insulated from the godawful dreck that is the internet because we have a moderation team that is very serious about purging hate rhetoric.
But out there? You've got rape apologists. You've got 13-year-olds and grown-ass men with the emotional maturity of 13-year-olds who think they can win an argument by offending the other party into surrendering. You have people who scream "SJW PROPAGANDA!!!" any time they see a game that acknowledges the existence of black people or LGB Ts. Even actual goddamn pedophiles can find places to swap stories and tactics.
There are many good things about the internet, our site among them, but it is a Wretched Hive where lawlessness is law and nothing you say or do will have real-world consequences on your life. As such, it attracts a certain kind of person, and that kind is the same kind that Trump's courting by appealing to white nationalism, hitting on his daughter, using ad-hominem "trolling" attacks in place of debate, etc.
Trump is every terrible thing about the internet made flesh. Is it really that much of a surprise that the worst parts of his fanbase are more tech-savvy than Hillary's?
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I'll second all of the above. As a frequenter of FSTDT I can safely say that Trump's rhetoric is nothing I hadn't heard before from the various fundamentalists, alt-right crazies, and "incel" creepers that we spend our time mocking.
I mean if you ever find yourself looking at Trump and wondering how anybody can support him, always remember there are people like this
out there.

It's something that's slipped into my vocabulary from Hawkeye comics, where the titular character likes to remind himself that he's "a grown-ass man" when encouraging himself to take less-shitty care of his life.
"C'mon, Clint. You're a grown-ass man. You can do this."
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.People asking why so many people and the hacking: Gucifer 2.0 is almost certainly Russian or a Russian front
and that's just what we can figure just on the civilian end (though the Feds currently agree). He/they is/are named after the original Gucifer that discovered Hillary's private server (a Romanian who was caught, extradited, pled guilty and sentanced to 52 weeks of jail time) and has been behind pretty much all the high profile Clinton hacks.
I'm having trouble finding the source but we are not the first country Russia's tried pulling this crap in - IIRC the other recent one was Hungary.

The other part of Trump soporter are the one atract to his sitcom charm(Becuase let face it, he could be a great Sitcom chararter) he is Guy sticking to the men(who now just happen to be Women, bonus point for dudebros) and really belive he is anti-establishment, this are the worst since they apply protagonist central morality to him, making everything he said fair, just because he said it
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"![]()
Yeah, I can imagine the debate going something like this...
{Pence says that Clinton, while overall not being a good choice for president, has her moments and isn't necessarily a bad person.}
{Trump tweets that lying crooked Clinton is a whore and a sellout who wouldn't know how to run a toaster oven, much less a country.}
{Pence says that Trump respects the Latino and Black community's, and that he apologizes for any misunderstandings Trump may have caused.}
{Trump tweets that he meant what he said about Latinos' bringing crimes and drugs into America, and that stop&frisk is the best thing since sliced bread.}
{Pence says that Trump understands and respects our current relationships with other countries, and wouldn't do anything to jeopardize our standing with them.}
{Trump asks via tweet where the nukes are stashed.}
I'm probably exaggerating a bit, but I think you get the idea.

The Clinton Foundation is actually denying they were hacked this time.
Some of the purported documents may be from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Comittee [1]
, some of them the authenticity is outright suspect.

Then there's good old-fashioned home-grown hackers who just hate Hillary Clinton for, as noted, politicking as a woman.
As a consequence of being a lawless wasteland, the internet is a popular haven for the radical right-wing. It's a place where you can let down your guard and freely hate Jews, blacks, and women without fear of real-world repercussions for the things you're saying. Places like 4chan, Stormfront, or AVFM offer safe harbor and camaraderie to people with dangerous, potentially even violent agendas that overlap heavily with what Republican principles have devolved into.
That, when you get right down to it, is why so many people are hacking Hillary over Trump: the internet community is his voterbase. Why do you think he spends so much time on Twitter? It's not lumberjacks or farmhands or construction workers hacking the Democrats. It's the 4channers and redditors who think it'd be awesome to have a President who puts the bitches and n*****s in their place.
