The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So did Assange actually do anything or is he just a deluded idiot?

Deluded. If the Russians had proper dirt on Clinton they wouldn't be doing this whole song and dance, they'd be using it.

Oh really when?

[up][up][up] It wasn't Assange this time so much as it was media trying to read into his "10 year anniversary conference" some major announcement. Realistically, if they have anything that would cause bad press for Clinton but not truly damning, it would likely be saved until a week or two before the election. So we can rest somewhat more easily.

[up][up]On Assange? Because he's quite a big name actually and wikileaks is actually a pretty big organization.

And at this point are an arm of the Russian intelligence wing.

And because a lot of younger people still think Assange is the only honest guy in the world being held down by The Man. Seriously, I saw an intelligent, reasonably well informed, liberal guy I know go off and talk about "Why is everyone trying to talk shit about Wiki Leaks when they're just doing the job that reporters used to do before becoming hacks?!"

Unfortunately he deleted that comment before I had a chance to go on about how Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw, and Walter Kronkite never willingly hosted a show on a dictator's propaganda network or doxxed every female voter in a country that is looking to curtail the rights of women.

[up][up]Oh. He's the founder of Wikileaks! Heh. No wonder. I feel silly now.

[up]Well, if Wikileaks, like Wikipedia, is a place where anyone can post "facts", then of course there will be issues with "quality control". Maybe a rating system for veracity could help.

The wikileaks "bombshell" was that once, behind closed doors, Hillary jokingly said (of Assange) "can't we just drone this guy?"

The ego on these people.

Wait, Alex Jones is seriously accusing Assange as being in cahoots with Clinton?!? Dear God, is that guy capable of reporting any story OTHER than hypothetical false flags???

I'm going to take the nutty right's increasing desperation for a Hail Mary from outside the campaign as a sign that beneath their bluster they're becoming desperate and know they're in for an asskicking come November.

By the way, remember how "Presidential" and gracious Donald was because he didn't try to use Clinton's Pneumonia for political gain. You can toss that one out the window after he mocked Clinton's pneumonia a few days ago at a campaign rally

Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump mocked Democratic rival Hillary Clinton’s recent bout with pneumonia by swaying and stumbling on stage during a late-night campaign rally Saturday in Pennsylvania.

“Here’s a woman she’s supposed to fight all of these different things and she can’t make it 15 feet to her car,” Trump told supporters in Manhiem, Pennsylvania.

The real estate mogul, then swayed side to side, and took a few stumbling steps away from his podium — an attempt at mimicking Clinton’s recent departure from a Sept. 11 memorial event in lower Manhattan, where aides helped escort her into a van after she fell ill at the ceremony.

Clinton, who had been diagnosed with pneumonia two days before the memorial, took three days off from campaigning to recover. Trump at the time sent his regards to Clinton, telling Fox News “I just hope she gets well and gets back on the trail.”

Saturday night Trump questioned Clinton’s “stamina”, five days after making similar comments during their Sept. 26 debate at Hofstra University.

“She’s home resting right now,” Trump said. “She’s getting ready for her next speech, which is going to be 15 minutes and is going to be in two or three days . . . folks we need stamina, we need energy.”

Video in the link.

I'm not sure I've ever wanted to smack someone as much as I want to smack this douche.

It's thinly-veiled sexism. I'd say ageism, but Trump's actually a year or two older than her, right?

"Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?"

Well it's my sig now so...

He Who's Name Is 538's newest election update summed up is: clinton's holding steady roughly 4 points ahead nationally which is a very comfortable lead. Things can change, especially if Clinton flubs the next two debates, but right now things are looking good.

I'm with Hillary on this one. Life would be so much simpler if we could just drone this guy.

No True Scotsman. He used the promise of dirt on Clinton to signal boost his brand instead of giving us the dirt (let's pretend Jones' line of Infowars Life supplements don't exist), he must be a Hillary plant instead of one of ours!

This is how people on Reddit get randomly accused of being a Correct The Record employee. Nimble America accusations are still rare.

Well I'm much less concerned about a potential last minute revelation. If Assange had anything substantial on Hillary he probably would have revealed something more damning than a joke made in frustration.

To be fair, that is a very shitty thing to say. Drone strikes shouldn't be joked by the government who is making plain use of them. They are horrifying and awful and should be treated seriously by the people who deploy them.

Given all the trouble Assange has caused and the type of human being he is I don't really care. It's not like she'd actually do something. Now if it was Trump I'd be legitimately worried.

The reason he hasn't been droned is realistically because he's in a white majority country, and more importantly, in a country whose opinion of us matters. Were he in the USA's traditional stomping grounds, he'd be long dead.

Alternatively he hasn't been droned because the Feds are smart enough to know making him a martyr is a bad idea.
