The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm not sure if the weight thing could be called hypocrisy. Probably just sexism.

It could be both.

What's the obesity range for men his height? He's not obese, but if he weighs 240 pounds or so, he may be close to that range.

@SSJ: whoops, sorry. I'm tired, and my brain kinda blended a bunch of stuff together. I think I kind mushed Darkseid War with Superman's death and Forever Evil. I should probably sleep.

Lex is definitely still wearing his superman costume though. I've been reading Action Comics, and he's part of it's cast.

I see.

This website seems to show that 240 lbs at 6'2 puts one in the "obese" category. :S

Yep. That's what happens when you subsist entirely on fast food. Trump dresses to hide the fact that he's obese. His suits make him look like he's just a large, well-proportioned man.

6'2 and 240 isn't terrible actually. Like he should probably lose 20 pounds if he wants to make it to 80 but it doesn't really match what people think when they say obese.

I thought it didn't quite match up because he doesn't look it. Is that why BMI indexes are questioned?

A lifestyle with no exercise and a lot of fast food is not healthy by any stretch.

There are plenty of reasons why BMI indexes are questioned, including that muscle weighs more than fat. By BMI standards, Serena Wiliams is obese and out of shape.

BMI is ridiculous pseudo science.

That said, Trump hides the effect of his weigh thanks to well made suits and wearing them loose.

The only bit of real information we were able to get regarding Trump's health is that he has problems with his cholesterol level. Hardly surprising, on a steady diet of fast food.

BMI isn't supposed to be used alone, every single medical test I did where my BMI was measured, it was used in conjunction with an adipometer exactly to measure if my muscle to fat ratio wasn't bad.

For example I am 1.83m tall and I weight 99 Kg, my BMI is high, though I am fairly muscular I still need to lose some weight because of localized abdominal fat.

BMI is nothing but an indicator, if you have a high BMI but isn't physically active the chances are that you are overweight, if you are physically active and still have a high BMI it can mean you have a lot of muscle mass or both muscle mass and fat.

Yeah, but the whole "Basement Dweller" comment didn't win her many supporters among millenials, as the majority didn't exactly choose to live with their parents - the economic realities made it a necessity. And seeing as Clinton (at first) wasn't promising to address the crap that led to the recession in the first place, it's a case of Once Bitten Twice Shy.

I think her words more or less imply that they aren't there by choice, since she mentions their lack of economic opportunities.

Since I suspect a good chunk of us don't often click through to the actual articles linked - Lord knows I don't - here's more of her quoted statement.

Clinton added: "If you’re feeling like you’re consigned to, you know, being a barista, or you know, some other job that doesn’t pay a lot, and doesn’t have some other ladder of opportunity attached to it, then the idea that maybe, just maybe, you could be part of a political revolution is pretty appealing."

"I think we all should be really understanding of that," Clinton said.

It does not exactly sound to me like she's blaming the young 'uns for being broke and living with their parents.

She does seem to imply that universal healthcare is this out there thing, which is dumb as hell. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and believe Clinton when she says she wants to incrementally move toward single-payer. We'll see how that goes when she's in office.

ThreatConnect on DCLeaks, Guccifer 2.0, the DNC emails and the Russian connection tying them all together. Very image heavy, so directly quoting this doesn't exactly work.

Summary of Analysis

We assess that DC Leaks is another Russian influence operation, possibly put on by the same Russian actors behind the Guccifer 2.0 persona. We base this assessment on the following circumstantial findings:

  • DC Leaks has posted content from General Breedlove that was germane to Russian military intervention in Ukraine.
  • Guccifer 2.0 has not publicly mentioned or promoted DC Leaks. Only in private communications with TSG does Guccifer 2.0 reveal prior knowledge of DC Leaks.
  • Guccifer 2.0 is the first known entity to have prior knowledge of and privileged access to exclusive content (Sarah Hamilton Emails) on the DC Leaks webpage before it was publicly available.
  • Guccifer 2.0 claimed that DC Leaks is a Wikileaks subproject where there is no public evidence of any formal or informal relationships between DC Leaks and Wikileaks.
  • FANCY BEAR activity targeting Billy Rinehart in March 2016 most likely resulted in his emails being posted to DC Leaks.
  • DC Leaks’ website was registered by an individual using a 1&1 webmail provider (europe[.]com), which is consistent with previously identified FANCY BEAR TT Ps.
  • DC Leaks’ domain was registered through an obscure Romanian registrar whose small name servers have been associated with other FANCY BEAR activity.

Additional information that would help us reevaluate our assessment and our confidence in it includes the following:

  • Information indicating whether the other individuals in DC Leaks’ portfolio were also targeted by FANCY BEAR.
  • Information indicating whether Billy Rinehart had been targeted and compromised by any other actors.
  • Information indicating whether individuals other than those behind Guccifer 2.0 can authorize access to protected content on the site.

Conclusion

Caution: We’re going to do something that might draw a little bit of scorn and make a reference to a Star Wars prequel. Ok, here it is – toward the end of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, we witness Emperor Palpatine’s realization of the Galactic Empire and the downfall of the Old Republic and the Jedi Order. One of Palpatine’s most effective tools in swaying politicians and civilians to his side is the use of influence operations. In his final address to the Senate he states the following:

The remaining Jedi will be hunted down and defeated. Any collaborators will suffer the same fate. These have been trying times, but we have passed the test. The attempt on my life has left me scarred and deformed, but I assure you my resolve has never been stronger. The war is over. The Separatists have been defeated, and the Jedi rebellion has been foiled. We stand on the threshold of a new beginning.

This type of influence operation, wherein select information is shared with an impassioned crowd, has the ability to significantly affect its audience. In the case of Star Wars, it helped Palpatine garner a significant following that empowered the Empire for years. Through our work in researching the DNC hack, Guccifer 2.0, and Russian APT groups, and now DC Leaks, we’ve identified a similar and more realistic influence operation targeting US citizens.

In our previous blog post, we indicated that Russia’s Guccifer 2.0 denial and deception campaign had evolved into an active measures campaign, or influence operation, by posting thousands of compromised DNC files to Wiki Leaks. DC Leaks provides Russia with another platform that they can use to hide their hand and conduct influence operations in the US. Such operations may ultimately help Russia sway public opinion or media coverage in a way that benefits Moscow. Irrespective of what Russia ultimately hopes to achieve, the very fact that a foreign actor is attempting to influence the US election should prompt every voter to carefully inspect and weigh all of the data, all of the variables, and all of the facts that enter into their personal decision making process.
