Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Ten things that Trump could (but probably won't) do to win the next debate.

You can't improve without admitting your faults. That's personal development 101.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.![]()
Journalistic integrity. Which Lester Holt demonstrated; while Matt Lauer did not.

I just read about it with a quick Google Search. Fuck the emails, this is worthy of an actual scandal. If this doesn't get around by the next debate, then Clinton needs to bring it up, because even it doesn't end him, it will at least put him on the spot and hold him at gunpoint. It's a great weapon if nothing else, and it might just even make the emails look like tiptoeing through the daisies by comparison. (Keyword being 'might', unfortunately.)
Eh, the press has been failing to do its job in a big way, but it's also been overwhelmed with the sheer volume of Trump scandals — you could devote an entire 24/7 network to discussing them if you applied the same standard that has been used to discuss Clinton's fake scandals.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."That's definitely a step in the right direction, especially because it was the Alabama Court of the Judiciary who made this call. The federal government didn't have to step in. Alabama's state justice system did it on their own.
That bodes well for hopes of real change.

GOP is actively blocking investigations into Trump and his Russian cronies, but still want to investigate Hillarys emails?!

If that were true, it'd be like Star Trek VI made manifest. Just swap out the Federation with the USA and the Republicans, switch the Klingons with the Russians, and you're set. All we need now is for Putin to start quoting Shakespeare and we're golden.

I don't think the GOP is actively working with the Russians. They're just treating the threat of potential treason as a partisan issue. Their response to accusations of Trump being tied to Russia is to go, "PFFT, no, that's silly, those are just election-year Democrat lies. Let's not give this completely unfounded rumor any dignity by investigating it."
Trump, however, may be actively working with the Russians. But his supporters don't want to believe that.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.As noted, every candidate says that. While secretly hiding their stuff.
The RNC has thrown all their support behind Trump at this point. Despite murmurings of letting him drop, they've decided to put all their eggs in his basket. They don't just not want the public to find out that he might have ties to Russia. They don't want to know that themselves.
A federal probe is a lose-lose scenario for them. If there's no fire behind the smoke, then they've still discredited Trump by launching the investigation in the first place. People will hear that there's an investigation and give no shits about the result. That's an atmosphere they, themselves, cultivated with the Clinton email investigation.
If there IS a fire, conversely, then it effectively invalidates the candidate whose popularity they are desperately clinging to. It would murder them on election day.
So the only solution they can find is to do what Republicans have been doing for years: plug their ears and try to scream until the inconvenient questions go away. Keep repressing investigations and stonewalling the system. Make bids for time and hope the American people will just forget eventually.
The entire conservative platform effectively runs on stalling progress and buying as much time as they can to keep the future from happening. Time is their weapon.

Trump's scandals are real scandals. Clinton's aren't. Moreover, the latter have been hashed out way more times already than is sane or reasonable, so bringing them up during the debates is pointless.
