The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

At a clinic today, an "alternative" clinic (it uses prescription stuff too, and other stuff - and the doctor encourages me to do my own research, too, so I have a lot of respect for her), the patients are, well, fucking nutjobs. Conspiracy nuts.

They were passing around a phone video of some conspiracy video saying that Osama bin Laden was hired by the CIA, and is being sheltered in the Bahamas. And one of the patients, a large man who once claimed to have performed an exorcism to remove a ghost from his apartment, said that the reason Obama had bin Laden buried at sea and wouldn't release photos of the kill, and said "We got him" just before re-election, was because they didn't actually get bin Laden, but instead faked his death while bin Laden is hiding out with US government protection.

They were also complaining that Clinton and Trump were our only choices for president in a nation with 300+ million people. "People call Trump a racist, but Clinton killed people!" And that the government is "so fucking corrupt", that it keeps invading nations for its own personal interest, and some other stuff I don't remember.

I put on earbuds and listened to music to block out a lot of that talk but it wasn't a perfect solution. God damn.

My mom told me that the reason such wackos tend to go to such a health clinic, is because, since they have health conditions that traditional medicine couldn't fix, they've come to distrust doctors, and from there, it expanded to distrusting organizations in general, such as government. I was thinking the same thing.

It does upset me to associate with such wackjobs, but it's inevitable. Certain types of things, subcultures, hobbies, whatever tend to attract certain types of people.

That said, if Obama had released photos of bin Laden's corpse, that would have shut the conspiracy nuts up.

[up][up][up] The Euro's were already clutching their pearls about how "bloodthirsty" we were and how evil it was to celebrate a man's death, never mind how the British left was out partying in the streets when Thatcher died. Can you imagine how everyone would have reacted if they'd taken pictures of the corpse.

Since alt-medicine is largely quackery designed to appeal to people who distrust Big Pharma, it's hardly any surprise that it would attract folks who distrust everything else.

A lot of it is. I agree. But sometimes things that genuinely do work are not FDA-approved and therefore not covered by insurance.

It sucks that this field attracts nutjobs. It makes their conversations painful to listen to. It's like being a liberal gun owner at a gun show, or something.

[up][up] I would say part of the problem is that Big Pharma haven't really shown themselves able to be trusted. How many times have we heard that some big pharmaceutical company has massively increased the price of life-saving medicine just because they can?

It's the same with many of the oligarchies who have power over industries in the United States... The Big Banks had their hand in the Financial Crisis with Well Fargo in the news right now for recent actions involving their customers. Even the Mainstream Media been trying to paint this Election as a horserace when Clinton's the obvious choice because Trump makes them more money. The United States is quite a mess in regards to vital oligarchies.

There are reasons to distrust them to a certain extent... That being said, people do need to be more mindful of not just taking the word of a Snake Oil Salesman at face value.

Nah, Jack's got a point. Although I'd argue that Thatcher was a lot more lethal than Bin Laden ever was, but that's not why people danced in the former's grave and took a Cry for the Devil stance in the latter.

Honestly, back then, I hadn't believed they'd gotten him. No photo evidence was released, yet we're meant to take the US gov at their word. The Military Thread guys here were vehement that this was right and correct.

Trump might be getting debate coaching from Chris Christie of all people. You know your campaign is in trouble when a Governor facing impeachment and/or indictment is the only one you trust for something so important.

I can just picture one of Trump's coaches playing the role of Clinton, attacking him in a session and Trump just going red in the face and spouting off his mouth/storming out of the room. Doubly so if the coach is a woman.

Honestly, in this day and age, it would have been impossible to keep Bin Laden's survival secret, and what's more, if Obama had the means to bring him into captivity, why would he squirrel him away in a safe house? Why not have him publicly brought to trial, creating a media furor that would keep Bin Laden's capture in the news continuously for months, or, do as they did, kill him? They have nothing to gain from keeping him in a safe house, and suspecting the government of that rests on a deranged premise that reveals the delusion of the person making the claim.

And if they had simply not gotten him and lied outright, that would have come out immediately, as well. Al-Qaeda has no reason to allow Obama to profit from faking having killed Bin Laden, but every reason to sabotage his presidency by revealing that Bin Laden is still alive and that "he lied."

wild mass guessWell, it could've been that bin Laden died but not because the US got him. Thus the lie would simply serve to gain points with the people and look more competent. And Al-Quaeda would have a martyr instead of a guy dying of a disease.wild mass guess Not that I believe that. Anymore. But the "quickly hiding the body in the sea" was really suspicious to me back then.
