Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

On the list of fun things from this election—watching "Morning Joe"'s whole format come unraveled, as Mika, who normally just smiles and nods, vents her hatred of Trump
. She's been increasingly unwilling to let Joe shut her down; this is the first time I think I've seen her talk over him.

I'm not sure how I feel about the case.
On one hand, the proposed band is aiming to reclaim a slur and using it as a part of their culture and who they are, which is a noble goal and furthermore fits in with the general counterculture that music bands can make up.
On the other hand, the Redskins is rooted in racist terms. It has nothing to do with reclaiming culture and has everything to do with making fun of an entire people.
While I don't think that we should be restricting free speech (and am thus inclined to agree with the band's right to call their band "The Slants"), I can't exactly ignore the issue that is the Redskins.
So I think the best course of action would be to judge both individually if that's at all possible- while the two names are about the same issue, they're in very different contexts to why they're choosing their names.
"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeUnfortunately, the First Amendment is pretty clear that the government cannot pick and choose what speech to protect and what speech not to, and trademarks are granted by the government. Thus, the government must grant them blind to the message inherent to the trademark.
Wizard Needs Food BadlyThat's pretty much a crock. The government infringes on free speech frequently. If it wants to determine that you cannot trademark a slur that is well within its power.
The Redskins name and trademark need to go. If the team was called "the Alabama Niggers" or "the New York Kikes" there wouldn't even be a question.
I agree the Redskins name needs to go, but the reason why government has to be blind to it is because a Republican-controlled government could turn right around and abuse the power to deny trademarks.
Wizard Needs Food BadlyI don't think it's an issue of paving the way- the redskins have been around for longer than any of us. This isn't anything new, nor will it directly lead to anything new. It's more an issue of an old way of thinking, and it's one that should be put to rest.
However, the government starting to control what words people are/aren't allowed to register or legally use can be a very slippery slope.
This can also be circumvented: The redskins case could still be deemed wrong; not because it uses a racist term, but because there has been a significant amount of complaints with the name of a major brand.
"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeStopped at the bar for a beer on my way home from work today. CNN was on, with the sound muted and the subtitles turned off. But the scrolling ticker-tape said things like: "Trump angry his staff told him he didn't win the debate. Staff urge no personal attacks." Yeah, like he'd really listen to good advice...
It also showed one of the few Trump campaign ads I've seen in the past year. Granted, there was no sound, but all it showed was people waving Trump banners and cheering at his rallies and at the RNC. Absolutely nothing of substance, just: "Make America Great Again! Yay Me!" That's his entire campaign platform, it seems.

Non Indicative Username...do...do they think Muslims enter the country by secret fishing boat? Paddling up to the beaches when Border Patrol isn't watching and army-crawling to New York?

The Muslims would have to be crossing the Atlantic on their own independent of official travel channels - like Mexicans coming in across the southern border, except over a body of water rather than land - for an Atlantic wall to achieve anything.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. It's pertinent because I posted a little while back about how Michelle Obama basically roasted Trump and implicitly called him an incompetent manchild who traffics hatred and prejudice as part of his campaign. As far as I've seen Trump makes a habit of talking shit about anyone who criticizes him even slightly.
I would say that Trump is too much of a coward to talk shit about the first lady while her husband is still in office but he's obviously given no fucks about attacking Obama himself, so that's obviously not true.

I don't want to deal with seeing slurs everywhere I go, so I hope the court rules against the band.
