The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Those polls function similarly to the "those damned minorities" memes on social media. They're fine and all if they convert people to the great cause, but they're mainly for internal consumption. Everyone pointing and laughing about the amount of fallacies or shoddy work need not apply.

And I suppose it shows how much of the alt-right is actually ineligible to vote in real life, I guess.

Edit in lieu of double post: In Which Breitbart Resorts To Open Anti-Semitism Again. Because anyone with half an inkling of knowledge regarding who exactly uses "globalist" these days knows exactly what it means. Also, the replies contain Breitbart staff digging themselves deeper and excellent defenses of Breitbart from its readers.

Not like this is surprising, but Trump is in total denial about Tuesday night. He's getting pissed with his GOP allies for saying the obvious (he lost), and he is apparently outright refusing to admit that he needs to change tactics.

Do the next two debates have any specific issues that they're going to be focusing on?

[up] haven't been announced, I think.

also good to know Trump is incapable of learning from his failings. makes him significantly less of a threat.

I'm afraid I can't explain myself, sir. Because I am not myself, you see?

I hope they bring up LGBT rights in one of the next two. Hillary could get a chance to talk about her plans to help us while Trump tries to figure out whether or not he backs up the party by condemning a group of minorities on live tv.

I'm a bit confused because I thought that Trump said that transpeople could use whatever bathroom they wanted to. Did he flip-flop on that like he always does?

After that he made another statement backing up the party line. Plus, Hillary can point out how horrific the republican platform is for LGBT people.

Whether or not Trump is personally against LGBT people is kind of irrelevant in my mind. If the GOP takes the house they'll restrict their rights anyway. I doubt Trump will care enough to oppose them.

If nothing else I'm grateful for the fact that Trump doesn't seem to be that smart.

I'm sure there are much more cunning and insidious racists out there.

Documents show that the Trump company spent a minimum of $68,000 for its 1998 foray into Cuba at a time when the corporate expenditure of even a penny in the Caribbean country was prohibited without government approvl. But the company did not spend the money directly. Instead, with Trump's knowledge, executives funneled the cash for the Cuba trip through an American consulting firm called Seven Arrows Investment and Development Corporation. Once the business consultants traveled to the island and incurred the expenses for the venture, Seven Arrows instructed senior officers with Trump's comany, then called Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts, on how to make the venture appear legal by linking it after-the-fact to a charitable effort.

JESUS.

At the rate he's going, Trump is going to have all of his assets taken over by the Government and/or Prison time.

How deep does this rabbit hole go?

As entertaining as this is I feel like any charges against him would just lead to people whining about how the justice system is biased against Trump.

Of course it probably won't have much of an impact. Best case scenario is that it pisses the Cuban exile community in Florida.

Apologies if this has been posted already, but Michelle Obama has some choice words to say about Trump.

First Lady Michelle Obama tore into Donald Trump Wednesday, telling Hillary Clinton supporters, "We need an adult in the White House."
