The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

There was a shooting at a South Carolina elementary school, at least two students have been shot (one was airlifted to hospital) and the shooter was detained.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/09/28/us/south-carolina-elementary-school-shooting/index.html

What will it take for American politicians to actually take action on this? Hundreds being massacred at once?

[up]Yes. Maybe even thousands, if the reaction to 9/11 is anything to go by.

So going off the two polls that updated since the debate, Clinton's mean bump so far is +2.5 points versus Trump. Getting that sort of shift long term is more or less the best case scenario.

source close to Trump tells @Katy Tur NBC candidate's children unhappy w/Bannon/Conway/Bossie leadership, think campaign is hurting business

Mood in Trump world is darker than unusual. 1 source says debate was a "disaster." 2nd: might hire debate coaches. 3rd: He's a fast learner.

If it was anyone other than Trump, I'd be amazed that he hasn't hired coaches yet.

Not sure if this has been brought up yet, but the FBI is worried that the phones of Democratic staffers may have been hacked.

After dealing with my insurance company for two days now, trying to pick up my insulin, and all the talk about mental health here, I think it's fair to say our healthcare system in the United States is atrocious. I should not need to jump through hoops in order to pick up a substance that I will literally die without, and I'm actually in a very lucky position. If I were homeless or impoverished with my Type 1 diabetes I'd probably be screwed.

Insurance companies are basically carrion eaters; they make money off of other people's suffering.

That's what happens. Healthcare is inelastic, and completely ignores the laws of supply and demand.

Everyone except possibly our politicians. Or maybe they just don't care.

Meanwhile, Trump's asskissing of Russia pisses me off more than ever now, for personal reasons. My Instagram (I never actually used it; I just signed up a few years ago out of curiosity) suddenly received a hack attempt apparently every 15 minutes (if the "did you forget your Instagram password?" e-mails are anything to go by) until 4 PM when they miraculously stopped. I changed the password at some point during that time. Today? It just got hacked. An e-mail told me that the e-mail address of my Instagram account was changed to some random Russian firstname.lastname@somethingrussian.ru address.

To add injury to insult, my fucking Yahoo e-mail, which I do use, like, all the time, got hacked as well and I had to use my phone to reset it.

Not saying I want a war with Russia over this, but if we can prove that this is state-sponsored stuff, what are we going to do about it? We didn't do shit against China when they were proven to have tried to hack Google back in 2010! China is still our "friend".

[up][up] Sorry if I said something stupid. I was just griping about my own personal problems with it I suppose. It just feels like there's no clean fix with it either because every change towards any policy comes with positives and negatives, and I'm sure there's some unforeseen consequence that would make things really bad for a bit after reforming the system, which in of itself will take a very very long time.

I also seem to have the same effect on this thread that a concrete wall would have on a speeding car.

Presumably he's suggesting people who are not Christian conservatives should be kicked out, but it's awkward phrasing.

Either way, what a dick. Even if he is basically saying to kick people from the room (e.g. convention) as opposed to kicking them from the country.

Colbert also covered Trump's claim of winning "every" major poll except CNN ... except the polls Trump claimed don't actually exist.

One of the polls doesn't exist. The others he claimed to have won were all online polls that had no statistical validity, because they didn't vet respondents and you could vote as many times as you wanted.

Unless I'm really reading the sentence wrong, he's saying he thinks they should stay in the room.

I really need the full context of this. One tweet just makes it confusing and I can't watch the video attached.

Hearing the conspiracy theories about Lester Holt is kind of hilarious.

A woman is going to be judged for her looks more than a male candidate, or at least in a different way. That's just the way it is.

Some of us women probably do it ourselves to each other.

Some of you do. Internal categorism is a thing.

But yes, one of the ways we know that Patriarchal values still hold sway over America is the fact that even when vying for President of the United States, one of the biggest questions questions that people have about a powerful, influential woman is, "How happy does she make my boner?"

Because he's not a career politician, which is a profession that a lot of people feel has become synonymous with dishonesty.

[down][down]I know right? The amount of cognitive dissonance in Trump supporters is just pure insanity.
