Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Admittedly, the environmental benefits of corn-based ethanol are dubious and bounded by massive corn subsidies and at least initially the corn for it was being diverted from the food supply crop. Ethanol sourced from algae or sugarcane waste has a lot more going for it.
But that there is definitely a stupid tax.
From Twitter:
Newt Gingrich
: Clinton is a fox who knows many things you can fact check. Trump is a hedgehog who knows one very big thing: We need change.

: Newt, we support your "Sonic and Tails" fan fiction, and we want to read it.
Fox News Pundit: Hillary Clinton wasn't attractive during the debate
To be honest, I'm surprised it took this logn for some kook to whine about looks.
And Trump was? The double standards just keep rolling along. We aren't electing people for Miss Universe. That's Trump's thing.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Even the Taliban can't believe that Trump is serious
.
Reminder, these folks have an analogue in the US that have thrown their lot in with the GOP. Get out the vote.
I know every era has its ideals of beauty that people strive towards, but I can't help but feel like we could be doing a lot more as a society to fight against the dumb superficiality of condemning people for not being PRETTY, as though that somehow impacts their competence in something as bureaucratic and red tape-bound as politics. I don't WANT my politicians to look pretty. I want them to look like nerds who spend all their lives arguing about the ideals of law and as little time as possible dressing themselves. We're not here to elect Hollywood movie stars... or at least, we shouldn't be.
Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.Nope, it's the way portions of the right deny being sexist while simultaneously grading every woman on her looks. Trump is a primary example; the bastard runs a beauty pageant, after all. Clinton got him good on that one towards the end.

By the way, is KanyeWest still planning to run for President in 2020?
Anyways, shallow political theater is as American as Vicodin and apple pie. Why give up such a proud legacy?

Kanye/snoop 2020 better be a fucking ticket.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?Yeah, because we need another vanity candidate who runs on popularity but has no grasp of the issues.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Going back to the Ford vehicle thing, I've seen a few anti-Ford memes, specifically about how bad they are from a few far-righters I know on Facebook, but I don't think that correlates to far-right hates Ford. They might start hating Ford now that they fact-checked Trump.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."![]()
Ford cars used to have a bad rep, but the company has made a remarkable turnaround in both quality and reliability in the last decade. The alt-right loves to visibly and ostentatiously reject the trappings of modernity.
Heck, I experienced some alarming anxiety issues after my bout with pneumonia a few years ago — having even the slightest cough or feverish sensation forced me to fight off panic. It doesn't have to be combat stress: any kind of traumatic experience can cause lasting psychological damage.

Once again, to those claiming that name would be better, we used it for a long time and nothing happened. The treatment of Vietnam and Iraq vets might be bad, but it's still better than the treatment of WWI and WWII vets was.
Not to mention that as others have said, PTSD doesn't just afflict soldiers. It afflicts abused children, it afflicts assault survivors, it afflicts those who've survived accidents. Don't act like it's just a veterans problem—unless you want to tell my fiancee that the PTSD she got after her car crash doesn't count somehow.
Ya'll need to get avatars, I was about to have a mild heart attack after seeing the dreaded quadruple post and thought some serious shit just went down.
As for something of substance: while I'm sure like me you all have 538 set as your homepage I still feel like posting this
discussion about what the polls could not be seeing.
As for the polls I noticed that their forecast has ever so slightly moved towards clinton after dropping 10% this past week. Still waiting for a bunch of the A ranked pollsters to do their thing but in the next day or two we should have a good idea what kind of movement to expect.
Preach it brother. Too many folks feel it's their right to tell people whether the trauma they suffered is sufficient enough to qualify for PTSD.

Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?Re: ethanol, corn ethanol subsidies were a Bush administration thing if I'm not mistaken.

A tax on stupidity?
