Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Strawman argument. That's neither reasonable nor practical.
I hope that Trump loses badly enough that the forces he's empowered in our society slink back to their holes and wither in resentment. If that doesn't happen, though, it won't be progressive retaliation that our country has to fear. It doesn't matter what I might fantasize about doing; what matters is what will actually happen: an upsurge in domestic terrorism and hate crimes, a grass-roots movement to usurp democracy at the state and local levels, the attempted disenfranchisement of millions of citizens...

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"A four year of Trump would be their punishment, unless they are white supremacists. Unfortunately, they would drag everyone else down.
Non Indicative Username@ smokeycut: I'd agree with Capsase here — maybe you can emigrate/claim asylum?
I'd hope for a Military Coup

Keep Rolling OnThe "Move to Canada" thing is getting very old, not least because Canada wouldn't accept that many immigrants. This is my country and I'm too patriotic to just give up and run if things don't go my way. That said, some minorities (LGBT individuals, Muslims, and Hispanics in particular) might find themselves in legitimate physical jeopardy and might well need to seek asylum.
That would mark a new low in our history, wouldn't it? It'd be hilarious in a not-at-all-funny way if the next major refugee crisis were from the United States.
My next-door neighbors are first-generation Syrian immigrants. They have citizenship. Do you think they'd be immune from persecution if Trump won? They've already talked about some of the things people have said to and about them. These are real people, not vague ideas.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I'm poor as shit, and Canada is hard as fuck to get citizenship for. It takes a long time, and a lot of money I don't have, and even then I'd probably get rejected in favor of someone with better education or work history.
And if Trump does die, we get president Pence, who is infinitely worse for LGBT people.

The border is lightly guarded and huge. If you'd truly have nothing left to lose but your chains under President Trump, there are far more difficult things to do.
You know, I was wondering this morning in my car if the GOP would shut down the government to distract from Trump's debate performance.

I'm nt sure insulting and suppressing minorities can be seen as anything but evil, and Trump's behavior as anything but idiotic.

Non Indicative UsernameA military coup is all but impossible in this country, but I would not rule out two things: the military refusing to go along with a blatantly illegal order from Trump and thus precipitating a Constitutional crisis; and/or him being assassinated while in office. But I'm not rooting for either of those things to happen.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
Either of those could quickly escalate if not handled correctly. Trump ordering the insubordinate generals to be arrested and tried might provoke a response by force, and a failed assassination attempt that was orchestrated by the upper echelons of the military might very well turn into a coup attempt. It's very unlikely, but a Trump presidency raises the chances from "never in a million years" to "an edge case at best".

All right, if somebody decided to vote for Trump, should they be rounded up and placed on trial?
@ Fighteer:
What you might get is an alt-right, US version of The Troubles.
