The General US Politics Thread

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So, I'm very pleasantly surprised about the debate. We got the best version of Hilary and what is probably the worst version of Trump, short of descending into profanity.

Someone on MSNBC made what I think is a good point prior to the debates. Basically, the instances where Trump was able to "look Presidential" were for 20 minute speeches in which he was reading off a teleprompter to a sympathetic crowd. That doesn't (and didn't) mean he could do the same trick in a debate format.

I do think he will do better the next time around, because Trump "being Presidential" tends to happen as compensation for a recent screw-up. So, he does listen to his aids to that extent. Although, given the mutual antipathy between Trump and Anderson Cooper, I wonder...

But yeah, it's weird how well the "baiting Trump" thing actually worked. My biggest worry is that Hilary exhausted all of her zingers.

One other take away. So, there's rightfully a lot of discussion of sexism, especially in terms of women dealing with jerkish Know-Nothing Know-It-All guys lecturing them on an area of expertise. And so it might be some internal sexism that what I/we see is the best Clinton is partly in terms of her maintaining a very pleasant attitude in the face of Trump's yelling. It worked in any case.

It also struck me that Trump didn't do himself any favors by also directing that hostility toward the moderator. Like I think Holt did a good job in any event, but it probably "helped" that Trump treated him like the enemy, so he had no incentive to go easy on Trump. Although to say that Holt was a thousand times better than Matt Lauer is Damning With Faint Praise, it's very true. Incidentally,I think that was Clinton's big weakness during that debate- having a hostile reaction toward some of the questions from Lauer/audience members.

For those who slept through the debates: most outlets and polls are showing a Hillary win.

For the pessimists among us Nate Silver did make a very good point in that this should probably move Clinton up a few points but what if it doesn't? If a horrible showing by Trump and a great showing by Clinton doesn't move the needle at all we've officially reached shooting a man and being forgiven levels of cult of personality.

I'm betting for a 2/4 point bounce for Clinton and if she can keep that going it'll be a very easy win.

Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?

There might be a time and place where that's funny but this forum isn't likely to find it so lately. :P

All the people wondering how it's trending may be WHY it's trending, if they're using the hashtag in their own tweets

Speaking of Internet stuff, the ADL now has racist Pepes in its hate symbol database. Feels bad man.

Lin-Manuel Miranda was commenting live on the debate. Well, now I learn of it...

Gulianni suposedly said that after last night Trump ought to be considering skipping the next debates, but the source was the Daily Heil Mail so I take it with a grain of salt until cooperated.

Well, my impression is that the final debate monitor, Chris Wallace, is sympathetic to Trump, so he wouldn't want to miss that one and I can't see him finding a good excuse to skip the second debate and then do the third. So I figure he's going to show up for both of them.

Well, this was damn good news to wake up to. Even CNN seems to think that Clinton won.

A debate expert (widely considered one of the top four in the US) essentially gave Trump straight F grades. Everything from his substance to his personality involved doing almost everything you aren't supposed to do in a debate, and a one-on-one debate didn't let him hide behind a GOP field that was terrified of his base.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/09/27/opinions/debate-coach-clinton-trump-debate/index.html

[up]Clinton didn't need a moderator to put Trump in his place last night. Hell, she didn't do much on that, Trump is very capable of making himself look bad.

My knowledge of how the debate went comes from the Chuck Tingle livetweeting of it.

I hope that the population of underrock residence wont be scared by the trump fans screaming around about how he actually won and bias and whatnot.

Clinton will almost certainly get a debate bounce. The question is, will it fade as Romney's bounce did in 2012?

Romney's faded because he did not perform as well in subsequent debates.

Trump's thing was that he presented no solutions other than his vague "renegotiate" and that we should stop bad things from happening in the first place, not that we have the power to solve them ourselves.

The Washington Post has a recap of many of the highlights, including commentary from lots of individuals. My two cents: Trump started out energetic (albeit quite dickish- he interrupted Hillary numerous times), but ended with his tail between his legs.

Romney's debate bounce failed due to Obama trouncing him in the next two debates, and Biden holding his own against Ryan.

On that note, one week from today its time for the Vice Presidential debate (the ride never endsevil grin). Religious fanatic #12586 VS America's stepdad.

Of interest to the statistics nerds: People are more likely to respond to polls if they think their preferred candidate is doing well.

It may explain things like convention bumps and Romney's post-debate bump and may have little to do with minds changing or swing voters.

Kaine is funny step-dad who makes bad jokes, Pence is pack you off to conversion therapy step-dad.

Also I notice that Trump's Iran comment is getting little press. When Clinton called him on his "blow taunting Iranians out of the water" idea and said he'd start a war doing that he insisted that it wouldn't start a war.

He honestly doesn't get international relations at all.

I'm aware of why Romney's bounce failed to hold, but strictly speaking, there's no reason that can't happen again. Clinton most likely has the advantage going forward, but the fundamental models suggest this should be an extremely close race with a very slight advantage for democrats, and that's what polls currently reflect.
