The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

"I will absolutely support her"

And that was the last recorded cell phone transmission from Mar-A-Lago.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot

Dammit my steam crashed as they got to if they'd accept the results of the election. What I miss?

Clinton won the debate. It might not have been a knockout punch, but this is still gonna sting Donald.

And we're done. That was both freaking awesome and freaking hilarious. Awesome because of just how well Hilary held herself; hilarious because Trump was Trump. It may be a bit too early to tell, but from where I'm standing, Hilary was the winner here. Let's just hope the rest of the nation feels the same way.tongue

If people don't call this a score for Hillary then I'm taking their booze away.

(Could use some more anyway to relax from that.)

My mom who was on the fence has declared herself firmly swung in Hillary's direction tonight. (Hopefully it sticks.)

What matters the most is how we accept the election.

Though I know that Trump has damaged his brand with his campaign.

I will give Hillary credit for keeping her cool more than Trump, who seemed to get far angrier. Sexists can say whatever they want about her temperment, but that won't make it true.

What's funny is that Trump kinda dominated the first few rounds, mostly by constantly talking over her. But after Hillary adjusted and let Trump dig his own grave by letting him ramble and then attacking him, it was over.

It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane.

Having not actually seen any of her speeches, I'm now definitely voting for her because of her, and not because of Trump.

I was expecting the worst, but was pleasantly surprised. Hillary got him to melt down a few times, goaded him into sounding dumb and mean, and hit him where it hurts while shutting down criticisms of herself.

[up][up] Wait until the poll for us to see what the popular consciousness thinks. Him doing alright for 10 minutes might mean that somehow, he wins because the bar for him is already so low.

There's also another issue; Trump did well in the opening of the debate, and was doing alright by Trump standards for the first half. A great many people might have tuned out halfway through and not really gotten the full experience.

I think this is the first time I've actually seen Trump in debate things. How the fuck do people even support this guy? Like, he literally acts like an immature child, and just about everything he says sounds wrong/terrible if you stop to think about it for half a second. Don't really see how people could see his opening as "strong."

So much #reckd.

[up][up] Strong by the ludicrously low standards he set for himself during the past year.

[up] I'll stop being concerned when Clinton is sworn into office. Celebrating now is really premature, and moreover, one thing a particular pundit whose name I can't recall pointed out is that virtually the entire debate was focused on the personal issues surrounding the candidates and them defending themselves.
