Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Is now the correct time to panic?
Trump has a 48.5 chance of winning.
No pressure Secretary Clinton, but the fate of human civilization is in your hands tonight.
And every time I look at 538, I start losing my faith in my southern neighbors.
The now cast is probably the least useful of the projections (until the final few weeks) but the other two are fucking terrifying.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. And keep in mind that the first debate usually goes to the challenger, so its very possible that Trump could overtake Clinton. Clinton could certainly stage a come back (by winning the 2nd and 3rd debates, having Trump spout off something that crosses the line again, or having a skeleton drop out of his closet that people actually care about) so we aren't totally doomed if tonight goes poorly.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects."And every time I look at 538, I start losing my faith in my southern neighbors.sad."
Not at all sad about them. I've never had an ounce of faith in them.
Honestly, what this election demonstrates and damn near proves is that the rifts in our society are eternal, and that the country that we've drawn on the map is at best a polite fiction in terms of social politics.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."In more bad news, someone shot up a mall in Houston. So far police are reporting that 9 were injured (6 seriously enough to be hospitalized) and the shooter was shot dead by police officers.

Apparently the suspect was a lawyer and there were "issues" at his workplace, so it looks like this isn't anything more than one nutcase on a rampage.

It's sad that happened, and I hope those injured make a speedy recovery.
Alas, we all know what's going to happen. Someone's going to whisper "gun control" and hundreds will end up stockpiling guns in deranged anticipation.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."But we don't need gun control, do we? A hero from the Republican party will stand up against them and become a real life action hero to take them down!
Fucking hell.

I mean, that actually does occasionally happen, (that spree stabber in Minnesota was killed by an off duty cop with a concealed carry permit) though far less often than people going postal and shooting up their workplace, school, or some public place.
There's a massive urban-rural divide in this issue, as with many others. In rural areas, gun control as we have it now works more or less fine. In Urban areas, serious work is needed. Ideally this would be something that could set on a municipal basis by the central government. Unfortunately, some degree of federalization is more or less mandatory in a country as large and diverse as the United States, and it's fairly unlikely that the constitution will ever be changed to further centralize the power of the federal government.

Obama's team isn't laughing at Trump anymore
“He's still exposed and ripped apart factions of the GOP, enhanced their brand as hostile to a rising electorates, and will leave them with no infrastructure,” said a more upbeat former Obama 2008 campaign spokesman Hari Sevugan.
“I’d rather live in a world where the two parties really compete,” Papa said, “than have a political edge on the Republican Party but have to live in a world where white supremacists have a channel and are legitimized.”
Then, for God's sake, stop dumping on Hillary.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Yes, maybe we wouldn't be in this mess if people on the left hadn't decided to turn Clinton into a grotesque caricature of all they view wrong with the political system.
She's an evil warmonger!...who has spoken about the evils of war, and worked for the victims of it, and made one huge mistake in 2003 influenced by bad intelligence...which, incidentally was not intended to BE a vote for war.
She's an evil corporate shill!...when not one of her detractors can point to worse than giving paid speeches as a private citizen. Not a one can name a single damn vote she's changed as a result of this.
Her charity!....an A rated charity that spends 90 percent of its income on charitable endeavors, with no evidence any donors ever received favorable treatment.

Take a drink if Trump repeats the same word numerous times in ten seconds.
We don't win anymore. We don't win. We haven't won for a long time. I will make us win. We will win, and we will win BIGLY.
(Yes, "bigly" is actually something Trump has said.)
