Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That's not what I mean. Things are not going particularly well for African Americans right now, and while the democrats are making big promises, its unlikely they'll be fulfilled, simply because they're such a loyal voting block for democrats. That's not without reason, but whatever political capital is left over after a party has rewarded its donors tends to go to winning over or reinforcing flaky or undecided parts of the electorate.
@Beary: That's Trump's way of saying "you better not fact check me, or you guys are getting banned from my future events."

"I could absolutely see someone like Trump coming from the left (in regards to their virtually nonexistent policy positions)"
Look the ex president of my country, chavez, he used the same tatic: first blame the establisment, them put himself into the "Just a regualr men, not related to anyone" to come across as incorruptable, them make everything a circus so he could beat everyone else and so own.
you want to see what happen? look my country how much a shithole it become, now make that bigger consider US influence and you get Trump
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"![]()
Venezuela's geopolitical situation is somewhat different from the United States economically though.
While Trump is thin skinned, it's not without reason; the vast majority of his wealth comes from his brand, and anything that tarnishes his image is thus directly harmful to his fortune. It makes a certain degree of sense than, to do as much as possible to strongarm media into portraying him the way he wants to be portrayed.

While the CIA was in touch with the coup plotters in Venezuela and almost certainly gave their plan at least tacit approval (didn't this happen right after Chavez started making threats about cutting off oil to the US? As impractical as that would be that would absolutely have put him on the Bush administration's shit list) to the plotters, there's no evidence that American involvement went beyond that.
Though, of course, it's entirely possible 20 years down the line when things start being declassified we'll find out there was a lot more going on behind the scenes than we originally thought.

Cruz is a snake.
New Survey coming this weekend!Venezuela cutting oil for the US would be like you shooting yourself in the face and then laughing because I got red on my shirt though.
Economically the US and Venezuela are different but the populist tactics Trump is using have a problem when applied to any democracy with enough disenfranchised voters: it works.
Inter arma enim silent legesWhile the geopolitcal situation is diferent, the narrative is not, chavez used the same "establishment is to blame, im just concern person so I dont have agenda, everything is their fault, everyone except me is stupid, if you give ALL THE POWAH, everything will be just fiiiiiiiiine"
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"
No, just regular politicians that wouldn't change the status quo drastically.
Constructive ideas and all weren't much of an issue here and there, nearly all of the serious candidates had solid ideas to build the country, but they didn't tackle the lack of belief in the political process and the population's irritation with the political establishment.

Inter arma enim silent legesPretty much, in the 90 people where tie of politics and parties as whole and thing where pretty bad, also Chavez unlike Trump clearly belive his ideas and look more coherent unlike donald whol plataform can be sum up in "what me, Donald trump, feel in this particular moment that you, worthless being,s hould know" but in general our oposition was weak, porly cordinated and did what Obama and H Ilary try to avoid: fight him in his own terms, which end with oposition being beaten over and over and over like idiots.
While the conditions are diferent, I see similiarity in what happen in my country and US(and maybe Bretexit) the idea establishment=bad while the proponent is "just a citizen" (which much of the time they are very part of the establishment) while this is reaching conspiracy levels, I could said this is part of a trent right now
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"I'm gonna need more alcohol before this thing starts. Who feels like setting up a drinking game? Take a shot anytime Donald calls hillary crooked and Clinton calls trump unpresidential.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?I've seen this drinking game proposal:
Trump cites 'many people'
Trump says 'believe me'
Trump calls Clinton crooked/corrupt/lyin'
They don't answer the question
The wall is mentioned
Putin gets a compliment
Take a shot if:
Clinton coughs
Trump brings up Bill's infidelity
Trump brings up body parts (e.g. bleeding from 'where ever', the size of his 'hands')
Also: drink the whole time candidates are talking after their time has run out.

1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVSo 12 hours from now, according to my clock. Dammit, I'll be alseep by then. Oh well, I'll settle for a summary (and maybe a replay) afterwards.
Clinton, don't you dare let Trump win this.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.

I heard that Trump thought that Lester Holt would be a biased moderator because Trump thought he was a Democrat, but he's actually a Republican. Why would Trump assume that Holt is a Democrat?
Is Trump a little paranoid about the upcoming debate?
Do not obey in advance.
