Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So Donald Trump has finally started spending like he's running for president.
A massive chunk has gone into online ads, hence why you're starting to see them freaking everywhere.
Considering Clinton has more money than him, this is a smart move. I've said this before, but my reading of Trump pegs him as a great deal more devious than most people around these parts give him credit for.
He's a failure of a businessmen, but if there's one thing he actually knows, it's marketing.

The post facto Christianity semiotic is an important element in exculpating the moral and cultural deficiencies encoded in the Confederate flag itself. It's similar to how quasi-Christian religiosity was infused in anti-communist rhetoric during the Cold War.

Governer Pat McCrory bans the release of police shooting footage.
He really doesn't want to be reelected, does he?
It's been repeated so many times that I see people all over the Internet and a few in real life just kind of assume that she's some kind of Nixonesque criminal mastermind when she's pretty much just another politician, with all the pros and cons that go along with that.
Maybe that's why people have such a strong dislike for her, even among those who aren't Trump voters?
I take solace in the idea that it's basically her version of "THANKS, OBAMA".
I would not mind eight years of bitter Conservatives trotting out "Crooked Hillary!" comments as they whine about whatever awesome thing President Clinton's done lately.
I find it pretty shocking...that there are over 20% of Latinos who DON'T have a negative view on Trump.
It's a fairly sizable umbrella, and not all groups of people who fall under it get along. There are Cubans and Puerto Ricans and the like who just love the idea of kicking all the Mexicans out and don't seem to realize that Trump can't really tell them apart.
I actually saw one of those here in Colorado a couple months back. Big, black pickup truck with two confederate flags mounted on the back.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. This is something I've had to confront in my own life because Trump doesn't seem to be an isolated phenonemon; similar politicians are springing up in a lot of different countries these days. It's sort of chilling, because around the time I developed my current understanding of social issues, I was also made aware of the fact that an openly racist, sexist, homophobic and dictatorship apologist politician was gaining a sizable amount of support in my own country
. I grew up in a fairly sheltered and well-off household, so the sheer amount of bigotry and callous indifference that are implicit in the support of such a politician was pretty eye-opening, and not in a good way.
The arguments in his favor are also eerily similar to ones made for Trump, many of them revolving around the idea that they're less corrupt than their fellow politicians or "can't be bought", as if their repugnant political positions were just completely irrelevant in the face of that. It really says a lot about the priorities of people supporting them, and their ideas of what integrity actually means.
UGGGGGGGGGHHH
New Survey coming this weekend!Yeah, I miss you too, Aprilla. It's nice seeing you again. Hope you and Gabrael are doing well.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Trump tells Lester Holt: Don’t fact-check debates
...Apparently he doesn't want to be called out for lying during the presidential debates.
This should be fun.
"Yup. That tasted purple."In other news, August was officially the 16th month in a row that was the "Hottest <insert month> on record". And sadly, Sen. Jim Inhofe (the one that brought a snowball onto the Senate floor to "disprove" global warming's existence) is still the Chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee for the Senate.
The article does explain Trump's reasoning as wanting the candidates to call each other out - of course, that would both lead to havoc and give Trump the edge due to his (false) reputation for Brutal Honesty compared to Clinton's reputation for "Crooked Hillary".

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"
He's trying to cow the debate moderators like he cowed various media outlets by banning reporters. He'll scream bias until they're eating out of the palms of his hands.
I really hope they don't cave, but the list of topics for the first debate isn't encouraging.

At this point I wouldn't mind seeing some old-fashioned flag turnings, as much as I know it would be like walking into the sort of bar that would hang a Confederate flag wearing a blue suit and playing "Yankee Doodle".
