Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Fairly certain it's been posted in here previously but just to signal boost it keith olberman
is doing a youtube show and it is gloriously angry.
@texas: While clinton is doing very well in comparison to other democrats she's still down by five or six points. This far into the race making up that many points can be nearly impossible outside of a major shakeup i.e. the FBI shitting on the trump foundation or him doing something drastically terrible.
I doubt we'll see any investigation into the trump foundation finish before the election and I honestly cannot imagine what he'd have to do to actually hit the drastic mark at this stage. Even calling clinton a bitch during the debates probably won't move him for then a couple points.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?Honestly, what's really concerning to me is that we're seeing major divergences in credible polling along methodological lines. You have some (A+ and A-) rated pollsters putting Trump up (nationally) by a point or two, one even reporting +5 (Rasmussen), while at the same time you have NBC and Quinnipiac reporting +7 and +5 respectively in favor of Clinton.
From my (admittedly limited) understanding of polling history, this is extremely unusual. As a silver lining, whichever way this election goes, political science doctoral candidates will undoubtedly be writing dissertations about this election for decades to come.
Mind you, there have been several recent Elections where Pollsters have got it wrong...

Even without the recent polling anomalies, I have thought many times than this election will be fascinating to read or watch a documentary about decades from now.
And then I remember that I'm actually going to have to live through the consequences of the election...

Confederate flags greeted Mountain Home students before protest ended
http://www.idahostatesman.com/news/local/education/article103303517.html
An example of just how much something simple can get blown out of proportion, thanks largely do reactionaries. A school's senior class wanted to paint the parking spaces at their school as a senior year project. One that could be easily cleaned off following graduation. One student included the BLM hashtag in her drawing and that drew the ire of counter protesters who, among other things, brought fried chicken and watermelon to the students.
that's some mighty good lookin' chicken tho...
I am curious how folks can say the confederate flag isn't a race thing when racists use it as a race thing. There's no other reason for confederate flags to be at an anti-BLM protest.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?Reports of a Clinton rebound have been greatly exaggerated.
Yeah, about what I expected. A bunch of people on r/politics were excitedly pointing out some good polls for Clinton and (either oblivious or uncaring of the numerous other times this has been said of Trump) proclaimed it was the beginning of the end for him. Meanwhile, the overall trendline of the still has Clinton in a mild decline relative to Trump. Tellingly, 538 now gives Trump about a 42% chance of winning, close to his convention bounce high of about 52%.

x3, x4 A bunch of guys in pick-up trucks with Confederate flags tried to harass and intimidate a Somali neighborhood after the stabbing spree in St. Cloud, MN.
So that racist symbol isn't limited to just the south, unfortunately.
I also drove by a truck in my Wisconsin hometown with a confederate flag attached to the license plate. I was like, "Screw you, buddy."

Up in Pennsylvania, every now and then I "enjoy" the sight of a pickup truck or SUV with a Traitor Confederate flag bumper sticker, usually accompanied by the (stereo)typical "NRA" and "FUCK OBAMA" crap.

Someone did tell me life was going to be this way.On the way to my son's school for open house last night, we drove past an intersection where the front yards of all the houses were festooned with Trump signs. My wife drove past a Trump demonstration at the highway on-ramp on her way home from work the prior day. It's nuts out there.
I wish I dared vandalize them or do some other act of protest, but I'd be helping to lower the level of the debate, not raise it. Whatever that means these days.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I saw a truck with a confed decal once. In Ontario. Northern Ontario. For some the confederate flag seems to denote nothing more then "rebellious spirit" which gets a little awkward when you mention the whole slavery thang the rebels were upset about.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote? If it's any consolation you get to ruthlessly mock him for the rest of his life after trump loses.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?Jimmy Kimmel uses fake tax returns to prove Donald Trump fans will forgive him anything
The Confederate flag is a white supremacist symbol outside the United States more overtly than it is within the United States where it has a lot of association with country music and "fuck political correctness" counterculture association that is not so pernicious. In Germany i believe they use it in lieu of the banned swastika.
It's prevalent up in Idaho because the Pacific Northwest was originally meant to be exclusively white. For the longest time, Oregon had a law forbidding blacks from taking up permanent residence there. They were anti-slavery because they wanted no blacks, free or slave, living in the territory.
I remember leaving OTC (the website in general, really) after a fight about how I was allegedly being hyperbolic for saying it's open season on black people. The contradiction I've been seeing has...not been mitigated, to say the least. When I see the continued unraveling on all fronts, especially from privileged groups trying to autopsy the problem without consulting actual in-the-flesh marginalized people with a credentialed understanding of that unraveling, I envision the meme of Kermit the frog sipping Lipton tea.
There's a prohibitively low capacity for critical self-examination in public discourse right now, and I believe it transcends ideological boundaries to a certain extent. It's one of the reasons why I and an Asian colleague were mulling over Clinton's "basket of deplorables" comment and what it entails not just for Trump supporters, but for anyone complacent and tolerant of both interpersonal and systemic bigotry that can and does lead to an actual body count. The latter seems to be far more terrifying even for the most progressive people.
As a black Arkansan who's grown up around this since Day 1, the large swaths of Trump signs (and a lot of unchecked bigotry coming from many white, male liberals) don't really phase me all that much because, if you know your history and if you've been paying attention, you will know that it's always been this bad. Or to paraphrase someone else, it's not an degradation, but an unveiling.

Here in Georgia the Confederate flag is held in the same standard as the Christian cross.
Seriously, that's how bad this is.
