The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Hardly. Stand ups can say clearly things no politician would dare. Point out the absurdities in Washington for what they are. They're more akin to The Jester who speaks plainly and that's a large part of why things like The Daily Show are at least as reliable a news source as mainstream outlets.

A desperate move, and an empty threat. If Trump loses the election, a purge is simply a final suicide. If Trump wins, it's unnecessary.

I'm a little surprised that the GOP didn't try something before now (like right before the convention, can you imagine the drama?). I don't think they have the balls to do anything, anyway.

One of Preibus' targets, John Kasich, already responded. He politely said for Preibus to go screw himself.

So should this be considered the official beginning of the breakup of the Republican Party?

Preibus's political career is over is Trump loses, given the whole Trump debacle happened on his watch. I can only assume he's making these overtures so that, if Trump wins, he stands a decent chance of being forgiven for the RNC's rather obvious hostility towards Trump throughout the primaries.

Let's make it happen then! Go vote, and take your friends! The fate of humanity depends on it!

The US is one of the biggest polluters in the world and a Trump presidency would make things even worse so he really is a threat to humanity. Of course our slow suicide isn't nearly as headline grabby as it used to be.

Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?

So, Hillary was on The Tonight Show last night, hot off the heels of Trump's appearance Thursday. It was just as much a softball interview (in fact, it was lampshaded quite brilliantly, with a bag that Trump supposedly left in the dressing room that contained literal softballs) but what I mostly took away from it was that when you compare the two interviews, Hillary came away looking far better than Trump did. Trump smiled and everything, but it's that kind of fake smile where you feel like he's trying to sell you something. Hillary felt like a genuinely more enjoyable person to be around.

Some might say it's not important that a candidate be "likable", but I think it's extremely important (in addition to having good policies, of course). People are more willing to work with you if you're likable, and even though this is our election, other countries around the world are watching, and who we elect will, like it or not, be the face of the U.S. for the next 4-8 years.

Likeability is important; I'm unconvinced that anyone really has any idea what the word means, though, if Trump's poisonous racism and boorishness is taken to be "likeable."

People seem conditioned to view Hillary's air of reserve as "inauthentic", while Trump's con-man approach is seen as "authentic". Our world truly is doomed.

[up]The makers of skittles immediately distanced themselves from this. "Skittles are candy. Refugees are people," said Denise Young, VP of Corporate Affairs for Skittles' parent company, Wrigley America. "We don't feel it's an appropriate analogy. We will respectfully refrain from further commentary as anything we say could be misinterpreted as marketing."

Trump's ego makes him very guarded on the comedy-talk circuit. You can see it in the one campaign commercial from Hillary where he's on with David Letterman talking about where his clothing line is manufactured. Letterman makes a quip and Trump has this very forced smile. He hates being the object of ridicule.

See also his stonefaced look at the 2012 White House Correspondants' Dinner, where Obama got the whole beltway media laughing at him.

I'm getting some Skittles after I go to the dentist, and let it be marketing.

Besides, I'll be showing support for LGBT causes too, so it's a two-for-one.

Yep, Skittles are awesome (and sustained me through some tired afternoons during my summer internship) and now are a great way to say "Fuck you" to the American fascist movement. I'll pick up a package at the bus stop on my way to school tonight.
