The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up] The Middle East is a "mess" largely because of Western interference. Not entirely, but largely. And trying to butt heads with Russia because... because... because Stalin? Not only is it not in America's interests, it's dangerous.

Isolationism is a smear word. Its used as pejorative for advocates of non-interventionism. Isolationism and non-interventionism isn't the same.

Because the Russians are enemies of NATO and it's our duty to stop their expansionism?

They're not interested in being friends.

Oh really when?

That's true, but either way someone was going to be scewed. I don't think it's racist to want to preserve your countries culture or to control your borders. What would be racist is if Nigel Farrage had said they should only let white people immigrate to the UK, but he didn't say that.

That is hardly the only way to be racist on the issue. And I'm not sure how exactly they were losing their culture?

No. There were definitely good reasons to leave the EU. And regaining their sovereignty is one of them.

Sovereignty on what, exactly?

I'll confess, when Congress doesn't want to approve treaties and agreements that the rest of the world has already signed because they "don't want to lose our sovereignty", I'm inclined to say "fuck sovereignty".

[up] Aren't they the same? Either way, it's a better example. At the same time, enemies of the United States need to believe that they're willing to use nuclear weapons. Still, that's a much better example. Like I said, Trumps dangerous. I wouldn't vote for him. But not wanting to provoke Putin isn't a point against him.

That, and fucking homeschoolers.

[up]Him voting Clinton isn't a surprise, but publicly admitting it...? This fucking cycle.

Polls in Georgia are nearly tied.

Well, to counterpoint, the US is a superpower. There's really nothing that can force the US to do anything it doesn't want to - refusing to sign human rights treaties is part of exercising that status.

Trump isn't going to provoke Putin, Trump will point out to all the states that count on the US to counter the Russian presence and say "They are free and fair game for you now".

Isolationism and non-interventionism go hand to hand, specially when it involves withdrawing support from your own allies, which Trump said he'd do unless they stated paying the US protection money.

You know things are weird when big names in the Go P like the Bush family is voting Democrat.

It panders to the people who think that their children are their property in the Biblical sense. (Speaking as someone who wants the rights of parents squashed wherever possible.)

Yes - severely restricting the areas where a parent can exercise authority over their child. For example, removing the right of a parent to compel their child to participate in religious activities, or to punish their child for not doing so. Or the right to not vaccinate kids.

[up]Doubtful - I probably go way further than you do.

That's a weird way of phrasing it but I'm assuming he's talking about things like parents being able to choose whether their kids get vaccinated or not, or whether they can deny them healthcare based on their religious beliefs. Stuff like that.
