Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump has said that he'd rather have Jewish people counting his money than black people. He's accused a judge of being biased against him because of that judge's Hispanic heritage. Either he's blatantly evil or he's truly dumb enough not to understand what's racist about these statements.

I thought it was an Onion article, but it's real!
New Survey coming this weekend!@ Wasn't that Judge a democrat that donated to Hilary Clinton and appointed by Obama? It's hard to know what he thinks and what he doesn't because he's such a flip flopper. For example, early on he went on Fox News... a network that's not friendly to muslims and said that if he were President he'd take in Syrian refugees. Then he went out and proposed a ban on all Muslim coming to the country. These two things are contradictory? Does he even have a ideology?
@ Angelus Nox It's happened a lot. This doesn't only apply to Trump or even Republicans like Reagan and Bush (both the Elder and the Younger). Democrats have race baited too. Obama's stayed above it from what I've seen and I'm glad about that, but Hilary didn't in 2008. Especially when she was losing.

Stein is an accelerationist quack.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. That just means a lot of people have been racist, a lot of people being racist/anti-Semitic doesn't mean what they're doing suddenly stops being racist/anti-Semitic because more than one person did it.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI think that Trump's main ideology is Trump.
I have read a quote from him saying that he hates it when Black guys count his money, and that he'd rather have "the guys with the yarmulkes" count it.
Some privileged people are so deeply sheltered about racism and how it affects vulnerable minorities that they may never be able to discern whether their own actions or the actions of others are racist. They are literally unable to be cognizant of it.
Let me ask you a question: do any of you think that Trump is able to admit to a mistake of his?

What? This isn't about race baiting, it is about Trump and his staff actively supporting openly racists groups because they are giving unconditional support to him. And the reason why, is because they believe that with Trump they would actually have a shot with implementing their racist and discriminatory policies.
If Trump's idiocy doesn't worry you, his voter base blatant bigotry should.
Specially when they were loud enough to make him and his campaign to backtrack on his discriminatory policies towards immigrants and Latinos.
No.

Inter arma enim silent legesI don't think that Congress would allow blatantly bigoted policies to pass through them (or at least I hope not, despite my cynicism). If they do, you can expect new people to be elected en masse.
Not to mention how many people on both sides of the aisle despise Trump.
How can people be so stupid as to hope that such policies could pass in a first world nation?

The man is so practiced at self-deception, he believes himself incapable of error. Whenever he flip-flops on some issue, he retcons it to have always been his position all along.
So basically, he pulls an I Meant to Do That? That is both kind of sad and amazing.
I know that he flip-flops, but I chalked it up a bit to him being a Gemini, but that may be an insult Geminis, with whom I have no quarrel.

Do not obey in advance. On one hand, you have the most qualified politician in the last 30 years running wanting to continue the progress of the Obama administration wherever she can, who maybe doesn't inspire, but she's a workhorse, not a show horse, who's been attacked for 25 years because of a combination of fear, sexism, and pettiness, distorting her work since she was a college student.
Compared to....
A narcissistic racist fascist who's made it abundantly clear that he would abuse the power of the Presidency in ways that's practically unprecedented, and wants to kill the family members of suspect terrorists creating a Feedback Loop of violence towards Muslims, and Muslims wanting revenge, and if that's not enough, wants to use nuclear weapons even in Europe, "if Necessary", where he has no check on that power and will undoubtedly once the first weapon is launch will forever change Western Civilization at "'best''' and at worst cause the end of Human Civilization.
HOW is this still a choice? How are their undecideds? I literally cannot wrap my head around the Cognitive Dissonance you'd have to be suffering from to not want to hold your nose (which is a ridiculous concept in itself) and stop someone from either A)turning America into a Religious Fascist State or B)End the Human Race as we know it.
New Survey coming this weekend!I find Undecided curious as well. If you care so little at this point, none of these candidates are appealing to you enough, and if that's the case, perhaps you should try a write-in candidate or simply abstain from voting this cycle. Why vote for someone you don't like just for the sake of voting? A sense of obligation?
Some people vote for the same parties because they've voted for the same party forever.
Do not obey in advance.Hatred is a hell of a thing, too. I tend to think that Trump supporters are so narrow-mindedly focused on how much they despise Hillary (for whatever contrived reasons) that they become blinded to the even-more-obviously-glaring faults of Trump, and vote for him simply because he's Hillary's opponent. The enemy of my enemy, and all that...
This Space Intentionally Left Blank.![]()
It's probably mostly that honestly. My parents are like that. They've always hated Hillary for somewhat vaguely defined reasons and they're generally more conservative overall. The idea of voting for a Democrat is probably unthinkable to them. There's also the fact that unless you go digging online it's easy to miss some of the more blatantly inflammatory stuff Trump is doing.
Personally, I've never found anything attractive or charismatic about Donald Trump, and I never believed a word of his self-hype. But that's just me, I guess.
I used to dislike Hillary as much as the next person, for reasons I could never adequately define. But I absolutely loathe the very sight and sound of Donald Trump. By comparison, Hillary looks like God's Anointed.
This Space Intentionally Left Blank. On a lighter note, those Trump games on Steam are joined by a Trump's America Civ V mod.
There's also one for Sanders,
but apparently not for Clinton yet. Guess she really doesn't inspire.
This is the same Congress that was up in arms over gay marriage and has refused to make the Voting Rights Act work after the Supreme Court ruled that it needed redoing.
Congress is already passing and trying to pass blatantly bigoted policies and has been for years without many consequences.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran@Tactical Fox That's a bit extreme. Honestly, I dislike both candidates and if I was American I'd vote for Jill Stein since her views represent my views much more than Hillary and Trumps. As for Hilary being the most qualified person in 30 years, I'd say Bush the Elder was. Both Hilary and Bush served for a long time in government, but Bush's record was much better. She's still a lot smarter than Trump though when it comes to politics and administration. I'm not sure Trump understands what an American President can do. He campaigns like a dictator, but America isn't a dictatorship and there are checks and balances that should keep him in line.
I think it's wrong to dismiss Trumps supporters as stupid or racist. The same thing happened to the Brexit supporters. I don't think the US and the UK are racist countries. Were some people who supported Brexit racist? Sure. Are some Trump supporters racist? Of course. But I think a lot of them fell that they're victims of a system that's failed them. Take for example, the TPP. Trump says he's against it. Hillary supports it.

From what I heard, a few people who voted for the Brexit were people doing it as a vote against the government, since a good number of people thought a "no" to a Brexit was a lock, even those who supported it.
Also, didn't the Brexit increase open xenophobia in the UK? It's the same with Trump, giving legitimacy to bigots makes them feel like they can openly be bigots instead of keeping it hidden.
