The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up][up]You're kidding yourself if you think something like that would actually happen.

Sure, it sounds like something he would do, but that's exactly the problem, because all he has to do is not do it and then everyone has to acknowledge that he's more sophisticated than they expected. He has repeatedly demonstrated that he has firm control over his image, at least in his own eyes and those of his supporters

His control over his message, on the other hand, has repeatedly been shown to be much weaker, which is where the debates come in. But it's also why I personally think the debates are probably going to be a shitshow. There is a very real scenario that neither candidate receives enough push-back on their ideas and policies, which benefits Trump (who can't back them up) and hurts Clinton (who can).

[up][up] Thank you. I'd also like to apologize for getting on people's nerves, and for being somewhat adversarial.

[up][up] Trump has demonstrated that he has barely any self control. He got baited by a Muslim Gold Star Family and has still refuse to apologize and he's trying to take credit for ending the Birther movement.

He absolutely could be baited into calling her out her name.

The only thing he hasn't been baited on, is his tax returns.

The easiest way to bait Trump is to call him a millionaire.

[up][up] Him giving himself credit for ending birtherism and blaming Clinton for starting it is actually quite clever, all things considered. It's by far the best way to handle that particular piece of baggage, even if it's something that would disqualify your average politician.

[up][up] He'd ether say Clinton is as well, or say his success shows he can get shit done.

Also didn't the whole birther meme first come out amongst Clintons supporters, though she herself had no role in it. The best lies often have a tiny bit of truth.

For the first time in the election I am truly scared Donald Trump will win this thing.sad

[up] Correct. There's just enough of a kernel of truth for this lie to sail.

As far as anxiety about Trump winning goes...I've been worried since he gave his New Era Speech at the RNC alongside Chris Christie doing a mock Kangaroo Court for Clinton and Rudy Giuliani doing his best Quisling impression. That was the height of "holy fascism batman".

But even if Trump wins Trumpism can't survive in the long term. Most of his supporters are old and not getting any younger, and white and to put it bluntly not making "enough babies." In the long term they are doomed. I doubt Trump could even get a second term. Then again I doubted he could secure the Republican nomination.

[up] That's assuming the GOP doesn't use the dominance of all branches of government to enact things like voter ID laws nationally and other things that surreptitiously suppress traditionally democratic voters. It also assumes that they don't at some point have a breakthrough with hispanic-Americans and/or blacks; all of Trump's hateful rhetoric will be forgotten if he actually ends up improving the lives of those demographics, even if it's done in a way that's creating an unsustainable bubble ala Venezuela. Trump's alt-right fanbase would be up in arms over that, but I don't think Trump himself actually cares about anything other than being adored by the public.

[up][up] No, Black people hated Bush and he wasn't an out and out racist. Their is no way they will forgive Trump. And that goes double for Hispanics, who feel insulted by him on a deeply personal level. And anyway Trump's economic policies are sure to increase inequality, so I doubt he will improve their lives

[up] His supporters would still vote for him. We don't need more bad shit about Trump. We need good things about Hillary. If I could give some advice to the woman I'd just tell her to be herself, cliched as that sounds. At this point that is really her only hope.

I do not want to read the new for four years of a Trump administration. I don't want to pretend to be happy for my Trump supporting mother when I wake up in the morning and find out he's been elected, and on his way to turning the country I love into a racist dictatorship.

A gasoline spill in Alabama has prompted a run on gas stations in North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. After some radio conspiracy loons started going on about the end of days in my home area hundreds of people flocked to the stations and drained them, and the ones that are left are currently scalping it at exorbitant rates. Some friends around Atlanta claim that stations there are turning people away and others are packed to the brim.

Kaine is the country's chill stepdad, Pence is the bigoted old man who lives down the road that keeps yelling at the gay couples who live nearby.

25 injured by explosion massive explosion on Chelsea Street in New York City. This is after a pipe bomb exploded at a charity run in New Jersey, though nobody was injured them. I think it's terrorists.

Edit: Fire department said none of the injuries seemed life threatening.

It was a charity run for veterans

[up]x6 Don't these people realize that runs raise prices because you're artificially creating demand? The same thing happened in my hometown on 9/11- everyone swarmed the gas stations, worried that gas was gonna run out. Well guess what happened.

[up]x2 Anymore, I automatically assume something like this is terrorism until assured otherwise. Which is sad, really.

The Mayor of New York disagrees with you about the blast Jack, CNN are reporting de Blasio saying that while the blast was intentional theres no indication that it was related to terrorism.
