Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Has anyone been thinking about how a Trump win would essentially destroy America's global reputation, especially among her allies? Even before he has done anything, the US elected a protectionist, white nationalist would probably drive anti-American sentiment to levels not seen in Australia/Canada/Europe/Japan/South Korea/New Zealand since 2003 and the Iraq War, at least.
Hell, Trump doing as well is probably already doing damage.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.
Add on top of that him more or less stating he wants to turn NATO into a protection racket jointly run with Russia...
The most alarming part is, when you get down to it, there's nothing geopolitically untenable about a Russo-American alliance, particularly in a world where China becomes the principal adversary of the United States. Pivoting in that fashion would be tremendously costly, and would trade a large number of weaker but dependable allies for a single large and very flaky ally, but if Trump ends up burning bridges with Europe (which promptly starts improving relations with China), and fully commits to the Fallout timeline by declaring China to be the "great enemy"...

I'd feel rather uncomfortable to see Canadian soldiers fight alongside a Trump led US military, what with his advocacy of blatant war crimes (massacring civilians, pillaging resources, summary execution...) and his reckless approach to nuclear weapons. But NATO/NORAD are too entrenched to ever eliminate and are too vital aside...
Trevor Noah went f*cking OFF at Trump.
Jill Stein and Gary Johnson will not be allowed to participate in the debates.

It's basically several minutes of Trevor Noah going Full-Belligerent-Rage and ranting at Trump for his hate of foreigners, pointing out that America is defined by its diversity and that what makes America great is that you can have so many people from so many different countries coming into this country, and how Trump himself has defined himself so much by what foreign countries have given to America, like the iPhone or Melania Trump.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Sounds better than last night's Jimmy Fallon, where he basically spent ten minutes kissing Trump's ass aside from a couple old jokes about how Trump doesn't know what coins are.
Twitter is full of memes today, most of which basically call Fallon a coward for lobbing such fluff questions. Can't say it's unwarranted, and this is coming from someone who has mostly enjoyed Fallon's Tonight Show.

I'm not surprised because Fallon does that for all his guests. He always seems to act like he's the interviewee's no. 1 fan. He's a professional butt kisser. That probably how he convinces his guest to do all of those stupid stunts. His show is probably the fluffiest of all the late night talk shows. So I wouldn't get too worked up about him not going after Trump.
However, apparently his house band The Roots snuck in a subtle jab at Trump.

Both would probably swap to tasers. Or crossbows.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot
