Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Tactical Fox 88: No, and in the process of putting words in my mouth, you completely and utterly missed my point. I said "when the lights are off," and I meant it.
The GOP are currently under the control of reactionary lunatics, but we know what they're doing and we can stop them at the ballot box. Democrats are not reactionary lunatics, but they are politicians - they only behave well when the voters are dogging their steps and keeping them from making under-the-radar deals with vested interests. The NSA, by its very nature, is a secretive organization, and secrecy breeds corruption - the same goes for other security organizations. That means that they need aggressive lights shone on their interior workings, something which Democrats and Republicans alike have every reason not to want.
The last thing we want is a return to the CIA antics of the Cold War, which were (like the Swedish secret alliance with NATO) carried on outside the public eye and with no democratic accountability.

That's par for the course, for all parties and candidates.
Following Ivanka Trump snapping in a Cosmopolitan interview
, Donald Trump Jr.'s interview with a Pennsylvania TV station ended abruptly after a reporter from the station questioned him on allegations of Trump Sr. using Trump Foundation funds to purchase a portrait of himself
.
Libertarianism as a philosophical ideal is really popular with young adults who believe themselves to be the center of the universe and possessed of all possible wisdom; the idea that society should seek to govern the natural meritocracy that would occur if everyone were completely free to do what they wish is intolerable.
I should know; I went through that phase myself, partly thanks to infusions of Robert A. Heinlein and Tom Clancy.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

I think it is something to be glad about. I'm voting for a candidate who's policies I approve of, and who I feel is right for the job. I don't see how I shouldn't be okay with that.
