The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So Colin Powell has been hacked by DC Leaks. If there's one good thing about all these recent hacks, its that it might cause politicians to take cyber security more seriously.

Nothing all that shocking in his emails, it just appears to be him and Rice bitching about people.

Emails show Colin Powell unloading on Clinton, Rumsfeld and Trump.

@Trump

“Trump just looks stupid trying to appeal to blacks and Latinos,” Powell wrote to the former White House aide on Aug. 21.

“If Donald were to somehow win,” Powell wrote in a June 23 email to Rice, “by the end of the first week in office he'd be saying 'What the hell did I get myself into?’”

@Clinton

"I would rather not have to vote for her, although she is a friend I respect," Powell wrote. "A 70-year person with a long track record, unbridled ambition, greedy, not transformational, with a husband still d—-ing bimbos at home (according to the NYP)."

@ Rumsfeld

“One day when we both have had too many drinks we can discuss why [President George W. Bush] tolerated him and why Dick [Cheney], a successful Sec Def, was so committed to Don,” Powell wrote on Dec. 16. “I must say I gagged as [President George H.W. Bush] praised him as the ‘best’ at the statuary hall unveiling.”

@ Wolfowitz

Powell called Wolfowitz, the deputy secretary of defense who spearheaded the Iraq invasion, “a f—king liar” after reading an interview in which Wolfowitz blamed Powell’s State Department for what many experts allege were the United States’ two largest post-invasion blunders

@ James Carville

.

“Dear James,” he wrote in a note intended for Carville, “you are the latest HRC acolyte trying to use me to cover her on the email caper. All these attempts and her dissembling has just made it Worse.”

“She now is apologizing,” Powell continued, adding that “suddenly you surface to throw another log on the fire.”

This email leak feels different from the others somehow even though it's supposedly the same parties. People will selectively take the points of either side but Powel and Rice were pulling no punches on either side in what they believed was private.

A group of economists have found that Trump's economic platform would cost the US $1 trillion over 5 years, and that's just the US. The campaign's response was predictable, "they are experts, experts are always wrong."

Keith Olbermann has a new web show. The first episode lists everything Trump has ever said wrong in the last 15 months. It's a hell of a list.

So, Trump revealed some details of his health to Dr.Oz (aka the face of modern snakeoil). The healthiest presidential candidate ever:

  • Admits he wants to lose 15-20 pounds, and is certainly overweight given his weight and height.
  • Is on medication to control his cholesterol.
  • Eats fast food frequently.
  • Doesn't exercise apart from playing golf, which he doesn't have time to do anymore.
  • Thinks can he play at a PGA level.

Typical for a guy of his age and lifestyle, but I'd still like to see a detailed report. The Trump campaign says it will release that this week, but we all know what their word is worth.

[up]Why do you think that Dr. Oz is a snake oil salesman?

I figured that Trump would eat fancy, rich person stuff most often, not fast food. :S

Dr. Oz loves pushing alternative medicine and psuedoscience. That being said, he is still a doctor... a cardiothoracic surgeon which means he knows how to operate on the heart and lungs. His medical degree is not dubious, but I wouldn't trust him as a doctor outside of operating on a person's heart and lungs.

Dr. Oz is a perfect example of what happens when the incestuous relationship between doctors and alt-med companies goes too far. He'll shill any snake oil product or "miracle cure" that people pay him to, whether it's got any health benefit at all.

Dr. Oz has pretty much abdicated his responsibility as a serious practitioner of medicine.

I wouldn't doubt his credentials or capabilities as a doctor. I do doubt his ethics. He has shown us that he is willing to lie for a profit. Therefore his medical opinion about Trump's health is dubious at best. I wouldn't be surprised if money or political favors swayed his "medical opinion."

Trump isn't doing this out of "transparency." He wants Hilary to seem weak. That way he will look stronger. He isn't

[up] Another way to put it is that you can probably trust Dr. Oz to know the right answer but not to say the right answer.

Which kind of makes him a lot worse on an ethical level than someone who pushes dubious medical advice because they legitimately don't understand why the stuff they are pushing is nonsense.

Oz is so bad the fucking senate had to tell him to cut his shit out. He and Ben Carson are excellent examples of how you can be very good at one thing and a complete idiot in other fields.

I'm sure Oz has some convenient lies he tells himself to go to bed but the fact of the matter is he peddles ineffectual or downright dangerous products on his show which millions of people really truly believe is medical advice.

Trump Jr thinks the media adores Clinton, thinks his dad would crush her if the media didn't let her slide on everything, and makes a holocaust reference.

In short, he comes from a world where Trump and Clinton switched places, and also made a holocaust reference.

I don't want to give the benefit of the doubt but I wonder if maybe he meant to say "warming up the electric chair", which I think is an actual figure of speech, but mangled the execution metaphor.

I mean he did also use the made up word indiscrepancy, which is a malapropism for indiscretion or discrepancy.

Considering the fact that this is the alt right we're talking about, I'm assuming he said exactly what he meant. But most news stations are going to ignore it because they love Trump.

Weren't there some states that did use gas chambers as a means of execution?

But, giving the alt-right the benefit of the doubt isn't something I'm especially motivated to do.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot
