Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

All joking aside, I hope Clinton's managers can clear a day or two of her schedule so she can rest. I'm not worried that she isn't getting top notch medical care but the nature of traveling a lot is that you catch stuff you haven't built up resistance to and the nature of putting in long, stressful days is that your immune function is weakened, and for someone pushing 70, pneumonia is more of a threat then for someone younger.
Going by reports earlier this week from when she hosted that press conference on her plane and was interrupted a couple times by racking coughs, she's probably been working through it for a bit already.

I'm quite a bit younger and I came close to dying of it a few years back, but that's partly because it went undiagnosed for way too long.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"538 has said that Trump's momentum appears to have stopped, though there haven't been any post Clinton illness polling done yet.

One would hope that a candidate getting a relatively mundane and generally curable illness wouldn't impact the decision making process for voters. But the American electorate doesn't really inspire confidence this cycle.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.![]()
To an extent.
@Smokey: to be fair, it's not out of the question that she could die or be permanently impaired from this at her age, so talking about that eventuality is not unreasonable, and the optics of the whole fiasco is doing a lot to make his look worse than it actually is. Though in that scenario, Kaine would take the top of the ticket, Sanders would at most be VP, though I'm not entirely clear how that works in a scenario where a candidate dies mid election.

Officially that would be sorted out after he took office. Though we would probably know who he intends to nominate well before then.
Paul Ryan would be next in line for the Presidency, but he wouldn't actually be VP. A vacancy in the VP position is filled similarly to a cabinet vacancy I believe.

Until Tim Kaine gets assassinated by a lone gunman on a grassy knoll. Meanwhile in Russia, Putin clasps his hands together and mutters 'Just as planned.' in Russian.
I'm almost certain that Trump will try to exploit's Hilary's perceived weakness in the debate or latter on in his campaign.
Yes, arguably the incident wasn't out of the ordinary, and Trump isn't a stellar example of health either. But remember, perceptions are everything.

That's not what I expected. But it's smart. At this point his rabid fans will follow him no matter what, he might as well try and appear presidential like he did in Mexico to gain some new voters.
