Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Then let's have the people hear what Trump said, starting with hours after the 9/11 attack all right here. A display of humanity as an adult if you may...
If you're so tired of "statuesque politics" that you'd support a man like Trump then yes, you are a terrible person.
It says that at the very least you're comfortable with the idea that a white supremacist like him can be allowed hold the highest power in the US.
And if you tolerate that then I just don't know what to say.
Oh really when? That's an overly reductionist view of the sociological mechanisms behind Donald Trump. This is something that's happened before numerous times in American history, insofar as popular resentment against an increasingly captured democracy is approaching a boiling point, and unfortunately, this time, racial resentment has become the go to outlet for a large plurality of the population.

Actually I came into this discussion as someone who didn't support either candidate, people who blindly support one candidate and deem the opposition into such blind strokes of paint will end up dooming themselves to bias and the inability to accept new ideas.
I see the positives in Hillary, but I also see them in Donald. If we all just treated one another as equals with different views, but still the same, maybe politics wouldn't be such a cold, unfriendly place. That's just my two cents.

Honestly, I don't really trust ANY politician to get the "job" done.

Warrior to the very end! My tumblr, dood!@ Rockler:
I'm not sure I'd call recent (as in post-Carter) US politics Left-wing, at least compared to the beliefs of the the Left on the other side of the Atlantic. In general, Centre-Right is nearer the mark.

Keep Rolling OnMaybe "politics" was the incorrect word for it, I was referring to US society really, which is undoubtedly left-wing in nature.
It's hard to clearly state the positive characteristics of an ordinary person, not everybody is a Mr. Rogers or Mother Teresa. As always, it's shades of black and white so your experiences through your life determine what makes a "good guy".
In my personnel view, I respect him for his success through his life, he had his downfalls too especially in the early 90s. But he managed to get back up again even when all seemed lost, not by a financial standpoint, but from a personnel one. You may consider it narcissism, but I feel it's courage to get back up again and rebuild your public image.

As someone who lives in the south, that's a rather bold claim.
Honestly, I HAVE seen some stuff like that, but thankfully NOWHERE NEAR as bad as some make it out to be.
Warrior to the very end! My tumblr, dood!Or maybe we should all stop using our own little bubbles to define entire huge regions. I live in the South too, and where I live doesn't match up with Le Garcon, but that doesn't mean what he's saying isn't true in his neck of the woods.
That being said, the South is super conservative and/or regressive, but at this point I am interested in how much of that is "Neo-Confederate".

The US is probably the most right-wing country in the Anglosphere (though Australia has its moments and England/Wales are looking iffy as of late). Its positions on capital punishment, welfare, taxation, crime & punishment, and human rights in general is more or less out of wack with most other liberal democracies.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.

That's why whenever I hear "But Trump tells it like it is" I just want to smack them. Because Trump lies. He lies all the time. He's really obvious about it. He can't even keep his lies straight. And he's done this for his entire life. I'm serious, when you look back, he's consistently lied or claimed a bad memory in order to weasel out of anything thrown at him.
Like, whenever he's called in for a hearing about a failed business or Trump University, literally his only tactic is to say that he remembers nothing whatsoever about the subject. He doesn't remember his business partners, he doesn't remember his business plans, he doesn't remember any sort of timeline, he doesn't remember any details about anything, to the point that it really should be extremely alarming, because if he's telling the truth, he either never pays attention or genuinely has a memory so bad that he shouldn't be placed in charge of anything at all. If he's lying, he does recognize those things and he has lied dozens of times under oath.
