The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

John Hinckley Jr., the man who attempted to assassinate Reagan, has been released after 35 years in a psychiatric hospital. He was already out on monitored, partial parole.

I have to call bull. Trump did well in a crowded field among candidates who couldn't afford to disagree with him too overtly. In the later debates, he dropped into the background, clearly having little to nothing to say about most of the issues he was asked about.

An on average, Trump is gonna have to talk for 45 minutes, in a professional setting with no cheering, no feed from the crowd, etc. He's going to be out of his element.

[up][up]True. But he also knows Hil has high negatives and can push on them, knowing its her election to lose.

As for being out of his element, thats unknowable at this point. The crowd might err to him or err to her, or or we could have another Lauer thing where the moderator gives him more slack.

They all will I presume, it will be at a University and not a stadium by a single news network.

@Rationinsanity

"People are sick of hearing about your damn emails" (Pretty sure we'll all aware of this so no need for a link)

and

"When you're white... you don't know what's it like to live in poverty." http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2016/mar/07/bernie-s/bernie-sanders-wrong-say-when-youre-white-you-dont/

Sanders completely disregarded a scapegoat he could've effectively used, limiting his options.

And he stated that a complete race of people do not know what's it like to be in poverty, this turned away a massive voting group. And before you bring up Trump, he never said this kind of rhetoric during a debate, which is what I'm focusing on at the moment.

You know off-topic, if Larry King still had a show (On CNN) Trump would be on there as much as O'Reilly or Hannity.

Sanders not bringing up out of context quotes and completely overblown scandals doesn't mean he was going "easy" on Clinton.

[up][up]Provide actual evidence that Sanders went easy on Clinton than. I only saw Sanders keeping his campaign (mostly) positive and not using typical Republican attack methods (ie: bringing up fabricated scandals).

If you make a point in a debate you have to support that point with evidence.

The idea that Sanders went easy on Clinton is comical to the point of absurd. He got flustered, wasn't able to present a shred of evidence of her corruption other than "transcripts!", repeated his stump speech 100448845 times, insulted white voters in poverty, blamed Wall Street for problems with racism, laughed when Clinton talked about gun violence, called Clinton unqualified which he was eviserated for, put out a narrative that the DNC was corrupt and rigging the system implicitly, kept hammering about transparency but never released his tax returns OR FEC filings and basically was an overall dick.

Please put that narrative to bed. I don't want to revisit that. I'm enjoying non-dick Sanders at the moment.

I have to agree with Fox. Sanders spent too much time "fighting the system," insulting the voters, and falling into the old-school leftist trap that the class struggle is all that matters and racism will fix itself once the bourgeoisie have been cast down. He might have won the nomination if he'd polished his plans better ("magic asterisks" were a major buzzword) and hadn't come across as so focused on his Big New Ideas that he got out of touch with events on the ground.

But easy on Clinton he wasn't. He just wasn't very good at attacking her.

CaptainCapsase from Orbiting Sagittarius A* Since: Jan, 2015

I really don't agree with the sentiment that Sanders was ignorant or ignored race issues in favor of class issues, not any more than Clinton was ignorant or ignored class issues. I will concede that he failed to prevent the Clinton campaign from branding him as such in the eyes of older voters.
