The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up]Note the common theme: the difficult h-sound various cultures struggle with interpreting (or just give up with), the flat a/e/whatever vowel and the b/p/d issue combined with throwing a variation on o in there. [lol]

or you might end up with a Japan in the South Pacific problem where the post-war government, by all appearances, didn't actually know all the locations the Japanese Army deployed people to and as such didn't extract them.
The fact that an unknowably large amount of the records about those troops' locations was almost certainly lost in the course of indiscriminate Allied firebombings all over the Japanese mainland's major cities (Tokyo in particular) may have played a factor in that.

This is the Most Important Election of My Life Because I’m Autistic from Wrong Planet

This is the first election in the history of the United States where disability rights and autism are playing a central role. This is the first election where individuals with disabilities have been in the spotlight at a convention. This is the first election where a candidate has focused on disability in a convention speech. Unfortunately, this is also the first election where a candidate has mocked those of us with disabilities. Putting aside my personal politics, I would find it hard to vote for a candidate who did not support disability rights and have a plan for individuals on the autism spectrum.

As a teenager, in 2004, I created Wrong Planet.net which was the first major online community for people on the spectrum to connect with one another. Since that time, awareness of autism has skyrocketed. That’s good, but acceptance and inclusion are even more important.

Last month’s Democratic National Convention placed a high value on inclusion for those with disabilities. Anastasia Somoza, a graduate of the London School of Economics with cerebral palsy and spastic quadriplegia, gave a powerful speech that was echoed by both President Obama and Secretary Clinton. Ryan Moore, an instructional technology leader with dwarfism, spoke about the necessity of affordable health care. And Hillary Clinton emphasized the importance of inclusion in her own speech, mentioning disability on five separate occasions.

The Republican National Convention, by contrast, seemed to focus mainly on exclusion. The word disability wasn’t even mentioned once. Eric Trump said that his father was running for “families with special needs children,” as if adults with special needs don’t exist.

The differences between the two parties’ approaches to disability also informs their platforms. The Democratic Party platform includes 35 mentions of disability rights in 19 sections. The Republican platform, on the other hand, specifically states that it does not support ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (which is supported by the Democrats).

Even more importantly to me, the Democratic platform specifically addresses the needs of people with autism, stating that Democrats “believe that our country must make supporting the millions of individuals with autism and those diagnosed in the future and their families a priority.” The text goes on to explain how this will be accomplished by expanding services — including housing and employment — to include adults, as well as those transitioning to adulthood. Additionally, the platform states that the party will “push states to require health insurance coverage for autism services” and stresses the importance of early screening for autism in children.

In stark contrast, the Republican platform does not mention the need to support individuals with autism at all. In fact, the word autism is mentioned only once, in a paragraph about biomedical research that also describes “new dangers like Ebola, Zika, Chikungunya, and antibiotic-resistant pathogens.” The juxtaposition of autism and terrifying diseases like Ebola and Zika is incredibly damaging to people on the spectrum, many of whom see autism as a core part of our identities. It’s also incredibly dehumanizing.

[up][up]Much of the above equally applies to other minorities, including LGBT people and people of color. This is the first time that I've seen a major argument from a disabled perspective. This expands the argument against Trump's policies.

So the "extreme vetting" rhetoric has apparently been expanded to all immigrants, nor just refugees.

Trump's mother was white. "Extreme vetting" means going back to the pre Johnson immigration rules, that made it next to impossible for people other than Europeans and Canadians to immigrate to the US.

But Trump's mother was in great health, the greatest health, and had such good words with the English language that she was like she was naturally-born already.

In the view of the hard right, the only okay immigrants are the ones who are white, only speak english, have a perfect American accent, and don't exist.

Seriously, they don't care about skin color for immigrants. They'll yell at an old russian woman to "learn English" while she's speaking English. Yes, I've actually seen this happen.

Trump's base is mostly chill with Europeans and Canadians, free trade aside.

In fact, a few Canadian reporters say that they have an easier time getting access to Trump supporters than their American counterparts. They play up the curious foreigner act to come across as less judgemental and threatening.

Trump apeal a lot to the idealist view of what a america should be: already speak perfect english, always obey the rule and if something bad happen them she fight back in individual sense(because otherwise it will be protest and protest is for the weak) and so own, thanks to that he avoid must acusasion of racism.

I saw on Google News that Breitbart is claiming Trump is gaining rapidly amongst Hispanic and black voters.

I looked for alternative sources. There are none.

The far right really is living in a bubble, aren't they? Hell, Politico has an article saying that 3 of the 11 battleground states are being lost to Clinton.

National polling is deceptive. If Trump loses the battleground states, it doesn't matter what his ratio of the popular vote is. That said, I have a hard time believing that he's really going to capture a majority of said vote.

The Merkel thing: Remember when Trump introduced Farage to speak at a rally? Most of the people there had no idea who Farage actually was. The vast majority of Americans have no idea who Merkel is beyond that she's Germany's equivalent to a President and even that's kind of iffy. It won't do anything to people who already think that, it'll confuse people who don't know who Merkel is, and it might actually swing some people who like Merkel towards Clinton.

On another subject: If people think Trump speaks perfect English...I suppose technically they're right, but he literally speaks at the level of a 5 year old who knows the extremely rare large word. I can guarantee that many of the immigrants he rails against speaks better English than he does.
