The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up]If he doesn't grill Trump on Russia, Syria, his general policy about giving the US armed forces the SS ROE, leaving NATO out to rot, etc.....fucking media.

[up] He's not.

Trump just said "I was never in favor the Iraq war."

Did Matt call him out on it?

LOL no.

I would like to point out that Sanders was born in 1941; if he did sit-ins in the 60's he would have been in his early 20s at the earliest.

And Trump was allowed to watch Clinton when she went first, he should have been isolated.

Since when are NBC a bunch of fascists?

Sounds to me like Trump is being grilled about his (lack of) plan for ISIS.

[up][up] I mean, that's more or less the same logic other American leaders have operated on when dealing with the middle east, just without bothering to dress up the imperialism.

And Trump just implied that the Admirals/Generals will need to implicitly endorse him to keep their jobs or be promoted.

I imagine part of it is a desire to make the race look competitive (and it kinda is but not currently a nailbiter); the narrative of a Trump comeback is something that will boost ratings. We can only hope they don't get bitten in the ass by propelling Trump into office.

[up][up]Guess it will go something like this:

"I swear to God this sacred oath that to the Leader of the American empire and people, The Donald, supreme commander of the armed forces, I shall render unconditional obedience and that as a brave soldier I shall at all times be prepared to give my life for this oath."

NBC launching the softballs at trump is incredible. Did the network change from a liberal leaning rag when i wasn't looking?

Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?

I'm not hearing softballs, exactly. The anchor is challenging the obvious stuff but also trying to keep things moving.

Ugh. I hate how much everyone lets Trump get away with. If the news stations don't start tearing him down soon, I'm going to start seriously worrying.

Also, @draft: I'd rather we just eliminate it entirely. I don't want to serve in the military, and I never will.

You've got to love how they let Trump hide behind the fact that he's not supposed to discuss the intelligence briefings he received and claim that our leaders have been ignored the opinions of experts.

[up] This is by far the most dangerous aspect of Trump; he's very good at manipulating media; he's a ratings magnet and he knows it, and they know it.

Draft is a useful resource to have if the US ever ends up in a major and/or defensive conflict. The way the modern military is formed, most conscripts would probably be in logistical positions rather than combat roles (those are getting very technical and take time to learn). And any war that would require a draft would probably incinerate civilization before the conscripts reached the front anyway.

I'm still not worried about a Trump win, the electoral math really doesn't give him a path to 270 yet, but this coddling of the far-right doesn't bode well for the future.

[up] I wouldn't be so certain; the "fundamentals" model suggests this election should be very close, perhaps even a toss up, and more recent polling seems to show a trend in that direction.

Yes, but if he manages to bully the networks running the debate into giving him softballs (under threat of causing a scene by walking out on them or something like that), there could be serious trouble.

[up]x4 Yeah, the fallout from Vietnam seriously put the kibosh on using the draft for interventionist wars. I'd rather not have the draft but if it came to an actual defensive war, well, I've got computer skills...

538 has Hillary's convention bounce almost vanishing. And we can blame the media in part (but mostly the short attention spans of Americans) for having a vested interest in a horse race and letting Trump get away with saying things that they know are just untrue.

I've seen quite a few people admit that the debates are what'll decide if they vote for Clinton or not. I'm praying that she succesfully annihilates him.

#137673: Sep 7th 2016 at 6:02:38 PM

[up][up][up][up]Trump's debate style shouldn't do well against Clinton. The only problem is that expectations for him are low, so for at least the first debate he'll have an easier time at winning people over.

[up][up]Convention bounces always fade over time, hence the "bounce", and Clinton's lasted longer than most. And historically that's a good sign, plenty of analysts say that (barring a massive hypothetical shift) Trump simply doesn't have the time to win over enough states.

Media fucking dumpster fire.

Do these morons not realize that their entire jobs and well being are being directly threatened with a Trump presidency?

He's all but confirmed that he's going to crack down on the media if he becomes President, but these fuckers are so goddamn short-sighted and chasing ratings, that they can't hold their dicks for 2 goddamn months so this asshole won't get anywhere near the White House?!
