Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I imagine a scenario that has Cruz ride an anti-Clinton/anti-Democrat wave in 2020, espousing many of the same views that motivate the Trump base, while also projecting the marginal amount of capability/credibility that Trump so desperately lacks. But whether or not the alt-right would even stick with someone like Cruz remains to be seen.
And who knows? Maybe Trump TV will bury the hatchet with Cruz and throw their weight behind him in (another) opportunistic grab for power, or maybe they'll hold a grudge and try to sink Cruz in order to support their own nutjob.
And then Paul Ryan swoops in to save the day. Assuming he hasn't been kicked out for not being enough of a nutjob.

Cruz is in many ways worse than Trump, at least in my opinion. He's even more authoritarian than Trump, through less fascist and more a classic reactionary, which isn't better at all in my book. Trump at least might not care enough to try and ban abortions or make homosexuality a crime (or so anything other than line his own pockets), Cruz though...

But can't you see that the people protesting Trump rallies are the true threat to democracy?
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotIt doesn't help (at least for Cruz) that his personal anecdotes are either non-sequiturs or just weird and rarely, if ever, involve other people in a meaningful context.
Trump is an arrogant blowhard and comes off like an awful person. Cruz comes off like he's pretending to be human and doesn't really get it.
This is pretty much a case of Trump simply having more charisma overall.
That said, they're both terrible human beings and neither should ever be President.
Sanders(who is out) and Clinton are just plain superior Presidental choices as is, since they actually will keep the country in far better shape. I'd rather the status quo is barely changed than everything becoming far worse. I want it better, but slowly getting better is still something acceptable over becoming severely worse.
Shadow?Either way, I don't see it being terribly likely that the winner in 2016 will lose in 2020. Incumbents have always had a huge advantage over challengers, so even if Clinton is currently doing low in the polls, once she's actually in office and turns out not to single-handedly cause the collapse of civilization, people will warm up to her.
In other news...
“I am pleased to nominate Mr. Qureshi to serve on the United States District Court bench,” Obama said in a statement. “I am confident he will serve the American people with integrity and a steadfast commitment to justice.”
It’s unlikely Qureshi’s nomination to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia will go anywhere. With just months left in Obama’s term, Senate Republicans have all but stopped confirming his judicial picks.
Dude is just trolling at this point.

Mind you, US copyright law isn't that bad. The problems are that a) it's fairly questionable that these treaties would have significant economic benefits, let alone individual parts thereof, b) most copyright and patent treaties are land-grabs by interested lobbies rather than useful things, c) TTP and TTIP contemplate changes to financial law that extremely dangerous and likely useless and d) fixing flaws in economic treaties is almost impossible.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanSo Trump won't release his tax returns until Hillary releases every email she's ever sent or received
. (TRIGGER WARNING: Breitbart)
Basically he's gotten to the point where he can't be bothered to pay people to go digging through her trash.
"Yup. That tasted purple."Wow, the ultra-conservative Dallas Morning News has endorsed Hillary
. She's the first Democrat to receive their endorsement since FDR.
Breitbart: The TV Station? Sounds like fun.

Collapse is too soon to say. When Democrats take back control of Congress and State Legislatures, THEN we can talk about the collapse.
