The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The GOP getting Ronald Reagan to beat Jimmy Carter.
Thanks. Over whom did they choose him? Who was the primary opponent who was "the devout farmer/naval officer/Sunday school teacher who helped the poor and went on to wipe out entire diseases in Africa"?

Ah, I read it wrong. If I got it right this time, it was actually about the Religious Right choosing Reps over Dems; I thought it was about the Religious Right + Reps choosing the wrong candidate in the 1980 Republican primaries.

Washington Post poll shows Clinton and Trump in a dead heat in Texas with or without third party candidates.

So Roger Ailes and FNC settled with Gretchen Carlson for $20 million.

...and effective immediately, Greta Van Sustren is out, Brit Hume is taking over her spot until the end of the election but he's already semi-retired and has no interest in keeping the spot, so there is gonna be a rush for her timeslot.

... Which means that after he loses the election, Trump will be perfectly positioned to take that spot.

Just as planned.

A Trump-run Fox News Channel post-Ailes would be catastrophically disastrous for the entire Western Hemisphere.

Celebs usually get the weekend slots if they get a show at all. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if Hannity tries to take up the 7:00 hour.

Trump getting a spot on FOX sounds about right. I mean hell if high traitor Oliver North can get one I don't see why he can't.

Oh really when?

They've put Clinton on the authoritarian right? /sigh

Do they know that ISideWith matches Clinton's and Stein's political positions almost perfectly? Not that that's particularly accurate, either, but the sheer idiocy of the journalism around this election has me very worried — perhaps more so than the election itself.

Although I dare say this quote from [up][up] might have truth in it:

It's a measure of how far the fulcrum has swung to the right that under President Eisenhower (1953-61) — a Republican no less — the top tax rate was just over 90 percent. Sanders, however, has been depicted in much of the mainstream media as 'far-left' for wanting to raise the tax ceiling to 52 percent!

That's definitely true, but it makes no sense to compare politics in 1952 and politics today when it comes to placement on the political spectrum. By point of illustration, Eisenhower didn't mess with tax rates because to do so was toxic at the time even for Republicans. It took decades of persistent and subtle erosion for taxes to get down to where they are now.

It feels as if these folks want to blame Democrats for the shifting of the Overton Window, which is again one of those partial truths that obscures what's really going on. It's not like Trump's going to raise taxes...

RE: Obama and the Phillipines, I caught wind of that last night and, sadly, decided to open up a comment thread from a Trump page - every one of them were either against Obama via "We shouldn't interfere", or against him in "At least Duterte's doing something about the drug problem!"

The latter of which left me cross-eyed - because holy goddamned fucking shit Duterte has basically created a real-world version of Judge Dredd except worse, as even civilians are being encouraged to enact vigilante justice.

As for the Pharmaceutical companies and Mega Corps in general, one aspect of criminal justice I'd love to see come back - proportional punishment. As in when there's a financial punishment for a crime - whether it's a speeding ticket or embezzlement - have it be in direct proportion to the person's take-home pay. In the case of an LLC, direct proportion to the previous year's reported (Net) earnings. While I can't really foresee it being done, doing it would definitely deter companies from that kind of behavior.

In that both would be better off gone.

A couple headlines are running now saying Trump has been "publicly endorsed by 88 ranking military figures" but doesn't go into detail as to who these are just yet.

I don't think that political spectrum graph is necessarily wrong, just not really to scale; if authoritarian is taken as the converse of libertarian (not the ideology, the political dimension) rather than as a synonym for totalitarian, it doesn't look particularly that unreasonable.

Even Clinton being to the right of Trump isn't unreasonable; while fascism is typically associated with the right, actual fascist regimes implemented bizzare mixtures of right wing and left wing policies. They were very consistently authoritarian, but not consistently right or left much of the time. In a similar vein, Trump has said all sorts of things, some quite moderate, some arguably left leaning. Authoritarianism is the most consistent thing about him.

Also note that their "right" and "left" axis is economic, with neoliberalism on the right and communism on the left.

In a book on museums and globalization, I found a reference to an an ideological schema laid out in 2001 on the worldview neoliberalism presents, and it's not hard to see how relevant it is now.

On one side, the State: constraint, closed, rigid, immobile/fossilized, past/outdated, stasis, group/lobby/holism/collectivism, uniformity/artificiality, autocratic ("totalitarian"); local.

And on the other, the Market: freedom, open, flexible, dynamic/moving/self-transforming, future/novelty, growth, individual/individualism, diversity/authenticity, democratic; global.

Obviously, there are a lot of complications added to this by US politics in particular, regarding the role of government/free market. But with a movement that prides itself in its lack of diversity, love of authoritarianism, and desire to "take our country back," Trump has managed to bring the Republicans more in line with the former set of principles (at least in appearance) compared to prior candidates.
