Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So, a new CNN poll shows that Clinton and Trump are practically tied.
http://www.cnn.com/2016/09/06/politics/donald-trump-hillary-clinton-election-2016/index.html
Before you start to panic, please read the article. It notes that Clinton is still beating Trump massively with minorities, has a better campaign machine by a long shot, has a better funded air game, and has a state-by-state/electoral college edge.
And we still have the debates coming up.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. So a New Jersey GOP candidate running for a spot on the West Deptford Township Committee tweeted a rape threat to a Daily Beast reporter
. One of those "rapefugee" threats the alt-right loves, even.
Remember when the GOP wasn't completely morally bankrupt?
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotYeah, at an absolute minimum, the Right (especially the Religious Right) has been at least somewhat morally bankrupt since a bunch of integration hating preachers decided that the moral choice was to push a divorced movie star who hung out in Hollywood and was friends with all sorts of people they said were damned (Jews, atheists, believers in evolution, anyone whose skin tone was darker than extremely light tan) into office over the devout farmer/naval officer/Sunday school teacher who helped the poor and went on to wipe out entire diseases in Africa.
It's just gotten worse with time.

| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |As everyone said, back in the late 70s, a group of ultra racist preachers like Falwall, Robertson, and the Jones clan who had fought racial integration tooth and nail and were facing losing their tax exempt status because they were still refusing to integrate their own schools like Bob Jones "university" threw their support behind Republican candidate Ronald Reagan, (an actor from the sinful and, according to them, Satanic Hollywood) over Jimmy Carter, who certainly was a lot more in tune with that Jesus guy.
Since then it's just been a progression to selling arms to state sponsors of terrorism, (Iran-Contra) telling God to stuff it on that whole "be a good steward of the Earth" thing, making government small enough to fit inside your bedroom, becoming ever more hateful of your fellow man, getting involved in a couple of wars on false pretenses, etc., until we arrive at the point we see today where religion is only free if it's your religion, culture wars need to be fought against any appearance of non-heteronormativity, it's considered good form to try to get African countries where you're preaching to make homosexuality a death penalty offense, and so on and so forth.
| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |They either don't care or even think about global civilzation. That would require caring about other people. Or they think they live in the end times anyway.
Meanwhile, Washington called off a bilateral meeting with the Filipino government after Duterte called Obama a son of a whore
. Yes, that phrase you probably have heard if you have had the misfortune to ever enter a multiplayer game with a Filipino player having a bad day.
@Tactical: That's a somewhat reductionist view of the whole Trump movement. Nativism is the glue that binds it together, but there's always been a strong nativist undercurrent in the United States, at least as long as its been a country. It wouldn't be gaining as much traction as it is without economic anxieties and a number of other converging factors.

The sum total of her entire public life was in being a pernicious ultraconservative old crone. I'm not at all sad she's gone — it's just one more villain out of American political life.
