Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

X3 And fundemental destroying any notion that the justice system is fair or that anything apart from a lack of popularity is required to have someone dragged from their home and threatened with execution.
Say hello to total chaos, the justice system would have no moral authority and mob rule would quickly take over.
Not worth it in my book.
X2 That requires a crime to have been commited and a person to have been found guilty in a fair and just court of law, that's not what's being proposed, mob rule is what's being proposed.

Seems like we aren't envisioning the same scenario. We're talking The Green Mile, not Mississippi Burning.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.I'm envisioning what would happen if you dragged prominent figures from their homes when they've done nothing illegal and threatened them with serious punishment for something that we said they could do.
You destroy the entire justice system when you do that, not only do you turn the person dragged out into a hero but you also set the precedent for lynch mobs across the country. Why should Jerry Redneck and his racist buddies care about evidence or due process when it comes to punishing the black boy who slept with his daughter, after all, nobody bothered with due process or evidence when it came to punishing the drug CE Os?

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranIn my perspective, it sets a precedent that if you do these things and are rich, we will more harshly punish you than if you were some everyman.
We expect more from you, so if you do this, the penalties will be severe.
Just as well I'd be all for lethal punishment of those hypothetical rednecks.
As it is, justice is toothless when it comes to the rich and famous.

My point is that "corporations are evil, you should hate them" is a dumb, roundabout way to get to that point, and also feeds into anti-vaxxers and others such stupidity. If "corporations are acting against the public interest and need strong government regulation to bring them to heel" is your ultimate message, then just say that, don't act like "corporations are evil, you should hate them, the end" is a useful message in and of itself.

Getting nuanced points of view out of comedic satire is not the easiest thing in the world, that is admittedly true. But blaming stuff like the anti-vax movement on such is probably over simplistic
. And as the video itself goes, I took far more exception to the strawman Corrupt Corporate Executive in the movie Avatar. Some bits of the Cracked video were one-sided but none of it is untrue.

In other news, Phyllis Schlafly died

I don't want to be tasteless, but I can't say I'll miss her.

Oh God! Natural light!Conservapedia must be read to be believed. They think relativity is a liberal plot, and they have an "Atheism and obesity" article.
I'm not too sad about her death. Didn't she make a career out of saying women shouldn't have careers?
Now known as Cyber ControllerWell, if there is an afterlife, hopefully she gets the comeuppance she's more than earned.
The world is better off without her, but the damage she's done isn't going away soon. Nor are those who picked up her torch.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot

If we're dealing in theoretical punishments, let's look at the actual law. The penalties for extortion that involves putting a "person in fear of death or of grievous hurt" is minimum 7 years and maximum life and may include fines and forfeiture of property.
The other thorny problem, however, is that it's hard to put a corporation in jail since part of the purpose of a corporation is to limit the liability of any given individual in it.
