The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I assume your worried about Lightysnake doxxing you or something, since as far as I can tell he went looking for stuff posted on other forums, which is also against the rules.

I would like to note that the odds of Lightysnake doing that stand at approximately zero. I know the guy, both online and in real life. He's never engaged in that sort of behaviour, ever.

He brought up madfoot's behaviour on other sites because he knows him from another site, something madfoot themself admitted too. That's still against forum policy and was rightfully removed, but it's hardly the sort of "looking for trouble" that you're trying to imply.

Also didn't Trump say he wanted the mass deportations to start the moment he was sworn in?

Yes he did. In the same crazed speech where he suggested deporting Clinton.

@madfoot

You do realize that bailing on the thread after someone says they recognize you as a racist from elsewhere doesn't really help your case, right? Would it not make more sense to remain here, and, since we have a policy against importing vendettas from other sites, simply never make any sort of racist commentary here, thus making your accuser appear to be wrong?

He wouldn't be allowed to do that. If he tried to give that kind of order, he'd be shot, no question about it.

I assume you refer to the nuclear weapons thing there, right? Because he can totally bail on NATO if he wants. It would be monumentally stupid, but he could do it.

And the fucking Supreme Court is on the goddamn line. Even IF Trump does NOTHING but appoint Supreme Court Justices, and he gets cockblocked on everything else, say goodbye to any progress in this country until the early 2050s.

[up][up] The nuclear weapons yes. As far the NATO thing, even that runs the risk of him being removed by force, though less immediately.

@Kostya: I'm just saying that people are somewhat hyperbolic about Trump. He's bad, and would be among our worst presidents, but the nightmare scenarios people are describing are often far-fetched or at best borderline plausible. The most likely outcome is several years of embezzlement by Trump with lackluster commitment to GOP policy. A disaster, but not apocalyptic any more than the Presidency of George W Bush was.

I think that even "as bad as Bush" is something to be avoided at nearly any cost.

[up] Of course. But it doesn't really help anyone's case to go into hysterics.

Yeah, having an openly white supremacist in office, while the GOP controls a majority of Congress, the Supreme Court, and most Governorships and State Legislatures.

Totes, not a big deal, right?

We're just being Hysterical.

Dubya was a Class 0 apocalypse for many people, and I'm not just talking about New Orleans.

Look, despite all their talk now I simply don't trust the GOP to not follow Trump's orders to the letter once he actually gets in office. That's ignoring the horrible shit he says that they already support whether they admit to it or not.

Of course, we're assuming Congress will allow the next President to appoint any Supreme Court Justices. As we've seen, there's no actual rule stopping them from dragging the confirmation process out indefinitely.

That actually has me worried a little. Ginsberg is one of the Court's liberal Justices, so once she leaves, the Court will have a conservative majority again. That means, even with Hillary in the White House, and even with a Democratic controlled Senate, the Senate Republicans could just filibuster any new Supreme Court appointments to keep the Court on their side.

Hopefully we won't have to find out.

@Tactical: Hysterics is acting like the world will end/the nation will collapse the moment Trump gets into office. Life will go on, one way or another.

Falrinn Since: Dec, 2014

Regarding NATO, congress could simply block any attempt to withdraw from the organization, and then vote to declare war against his objections (overriding a veto if necessary) if an overt attack on a NATO nation actually occurred.

If Trump then refused to execute the war, then Congress would have grounds for impeachment.

Now admittedly I don't trust congress to do the sensible thing, but Trump is so despised by the political establishment in both parties that the chances of being removed from office by Congress are quite high.

It's not even a matter of trump following orders. Trump will sign the legislation they put in front of him and McConnell and Ryan have openly said as much that's what they're going for.

CaptainCapsase from Orbiting Sagittarius A* Since: Jan, 2015

[up] Which means George Bush 2.0, not the end of America. That's bad enough to do everything we can to avoid that scenario, of course.

Lightysnake Since: May, 2010

That is, of course, only part of what we have to worry about with him in office. Life doesn't go on for all of us. Republican victories mean the worsening or even cessation of the lives of some.

You know, we keep talking about the absolute worst outcome here, but assuming Hilary wins, what's the best possible outcome we can hope for with Congress and the Supreme Court?

CaptainCapsase from Orbiting Sagittarius A* Since: Jan, 2015

Major improvements to the criminal justice system and an end to the political deadlock.

Best outcome?

Trumpets blame moderate conservatives for trumps loss; democrats win congress during the infighting.

They happily confirm two new progressive supreme justices and allow the president to do things without screeching at her.

The Alt-right isn't going away if Trump wins. If he gets in and the GOP refuses to play ball they'll probably just get primaried like they did when the Tea Party surge happened.

The Alt-Right will at least be rebuked if Hillary wins. They won't go away, but seeing the American people reject their white supremacist war against "SJW cucks" will be a satisfying moment of, "What were you trying to prove? That deep down, everyone's as ugly as you? You're alone."

[up] Only if the loss is worse than Romneys. If Trump does better than Romney, they're not going away even if he loses, which is why I'm rather pessimistic about Clinton's prospects in 2020.

They wouldn't go away even if Clinton somehow performed a 1964 landslide, so I don't see why the margin would matter.

A decent percentage of this country are just flat out racist fuckwads.

A lot of the alt-right ideas were already part of the mainstream GOP. They're just a lot more open about them.
