Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The "fuck you" to "politics as usual."
It's a position I thoroughly understand. But as it turns out, it's hard to get people to focus on the self-serving nature of the political establishment when he's running one of the most bloodthirsty campaigns we've ever seen.
We hold these truths to be self-evident: that Donald Trump is a sociopath drunk on himself; that his religion is one of unbridled avarice; that in the pursuit of power he preaches hatred; that the only God he recognizes is Donald Trump; that he is a pathological liar and a con-man whose only talent is selling himself at grossly inflated prices; that he is wholly ignorant of diplomacy and is categorically incompetent to hold the office of President of the United States; that his attaining of any public office, even that of Sewer Commissioner, would be disastrous for anything that falls under his purview.
This Space Intentionally Left Blank.Basically, in stance and potential harm to the country, Cruz is exactly like Trump except he knows how to address a crowd and present a political argument without coming off like a deranged bigot. He still IS, mind you, but he knows how to talk like a reasonable human being.
For an added shade of dangerous, Cruz also has religious fervor guiding him rather than generic bigotry. He literally believes he has a holy destiny bestowed by God himself that he must fulfill by becoming President
There is a distinct possibility that Ted Cruz might actually have had a shot at beating Hillary in November. At least, more than Trump does.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Oh Wyld Chyld, you poor naive soul. The National Anthem is supposed to be SERIOUS BUSINESS in the states (most of the time anyway - I don't think most people will admit it but they a lot of us don't really care for it). Its like our flag- whenever anything happens to it, the more patriotic types get into a frenzy and its all over the news. In actuality this isn't about disrespecting the military or anything. Kaep was making a political statement about racism. And that's all you need to know
@Madfoot: Riiiiiiiiight. I just have this to say about this whole thing: Regardless of whether Trump is a bigot or anti-gay, remember this. He is supporting bigoted views, is also supporting anti-LGBT views, (which affect you, since you're apparently LGBT and all, so you're basically supporting a man who is himself supporting a system that would like to pretend you don't exist,) he is anti immigration, (and considering that you are part Syrian, that not only makes you susceptible to the Republican views on immigration, but it also makes you vulnerable to the party's historically racists views and potential policies,) and is basically supporting a party that goes against everything that the modern world is supposed to believe in, such as peace, love, justice, brotherhood and so on and so forth.
And if, beyond all laws of logic and rationality, none of this matters to you, keep in mind that, as has been said, Trump wants to run the country like he runs his business. And as has been proven, he has no clue how to run any business short of maybe a popsicle stand. So what makes you think he has any idea how to run a country?
And last, but certainly not least, most of the evidence points to Trump not having any clear stance or policies, and just saying whatever he thinks will get himself elected, regardless of whether or not he actually believes it. (Though I do believe he was telling the truth about being fond of Putin, which in and of itself should be a red flag.) So how can you expect someone who only seems to care about getting himself elected and not about actually running the nation to do anything remotely close to a good job in office?
No offense, but all of the evidence is there. Trump is supporting regressive views, doesn't know how to run his own business, and has no clue to run a country either. So how can Trump possibly be even a half-decent candidate for office?

"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Oh, fuck me.
Guys, I know Madfoot. He is not someone who is interested in an honest exchange of ideas. He posts at another forum Noname and I frequent, and to be blunt, he's not just a far-right winger, he's a blatant white supremacist. Do not expect honesty, integrity, or any semblance of fair debate from him. Just to be clear, this is someone who openly praised Vox Day for his views as a 'wonderful man' and gushed about the Alt-Right, and when I presented Day calling black people 'half-savages' incapable of building a civilization, his response was "can you prove him wrong?" He has been caught, more than once, posting information and statistics from proud white supremacists as well.
The thing with Day happened yesterday. You all need to know who you're dealing with right now. before you expend your effort on this.

...But... I... but...
He's a half-Syrian LGBT! What is he, a Boomerang Bigot? Because that's the only way I can wrap my head around this.

He may be a Boomerang Bigot.
He also could just be Milo Yiannopoulos's alter ego.
"If you spend all your heart / On something that has died / You are not alive and that can't be a life"If you have proof that he's a white supremacist holler the mods with your link; pesudo-nazis definitely break our don't be a dick rule.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?@Madfoot: Other people have said this, but I think I'll just throw my two cents in anyway:
The thing about states' rights, at least as far as LGBT+ issues go, is that people are actively being denied their rights because of who they are, and are suffering because of that. So while I'm fine for the state governments to decide some things, this is honestly too important of an issue to wait for every state to come around - the federal government needs to get involved. I mean, if they had decided to let each state to determine whether they would repeal Jim Crow...well, would it ever have happened? I'd prefer for my fellow citizens to be able to live in say, Idaho, without having to worrying about being fired due to their sexual orientation and/or gender identity or being forced to undergo conversion therapy; and I'd like that to be sooner rather than later (or never).
As for Trump's stance on LGBT+ rights...to be honest, I don't really think he gives a shit either way. Granted, he doesn't seem to have a problem with them in the same way Ted Cruz does, but he doesn't seem to have any problem with the Republican Platform, or with picking that stellar champion of LGBT+ rights, Mike Pence as his running mate. So even if he's not homophobic, transphobic, etc. himself, by standing with these people, he's not really any better.
@Lightysnake: Well, if that is indeed true...then fuck him, I guess.

Oh God! Natural light!Editing this as not to be modded, but just to be clear,
Vox Day stated that black people are ignorant sub=human half-savages who cannot build a civilization Madfoot's response was "can you prove him wrong or are you just crying racist?" We'll let this speak for itself.

Why don't we just discuss something actually relevant. I don't know if this has already been discussed, but Clinton is planning large reforms to the treatment of people with mental illnesses

Out of curiosity, if someone came into the thread to offer their "politely expressed opinion" that black people are inherently inferior and should be denied the vote, would you be saying the same thing to me? I've met some very polite, well-spoken racists. Didn't make their message less repugnant and didn't make them less deserving of getting evicted from the threads they were posting in.
Madfoot's not quite there yet, but with all the dogwhistles s/he included in that initial screed, they're getting close.
