Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

We won't call you an idiot but will ask that you be civil and we will likely as a group question you as to why you support Trump and engage in an evidence based debate with you as to your logic.
If you can't express your support for Trump in a civil manner than you may well get into trouble.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI would ask you why you support the candidate who has plans to round up as many Mexicans and Muslims as possible.
I would ask you why you support his platform, which calls for gay parents to lose their children, trans people to be barred from using the bathroom, and put gay kids in ex gay camps.
I would ask you why you support the candidate who mocks the disabled, the Jewish, Black people, and women.
I would ask you why you support the man who thinks we should kill civilians in Arabic countries and launch nuclear warheads at our enemies.

Well, I voted for him in 2012, so I'm quite happy he's not going to take away as many votes from my preferred candidate as I thought.
P.S. Is there a quote button?

Is that actually his platform or just the Republican party's super horrible one? Not that I expect his own to be any better but he has he actually said he's for all of that? Well, the first part goes without saying since he's basically based his campaign on it.

And we have ourselves a Trump supporter. This oughta get real interesting real fast.
Speaking of Trump Maddow on Trump as another iteration of the Know-Nothing movement
.
Oh, and in further BS from the Internet left, TYT is trying to spin the Mexico trip as a "big win for Trump". With who, I might ask?
The crack about Johnson being "too PC" leaves me with my suspicions but I guess we'll find out.

As I've said before, Mexico is the Walder Frey of the world, living to brood over all the slights its suffered including the Texas incident in the 1830's, the 1846 war, the 1914 invasion of Veracruz, the 1917 incidents, the 1938 trade embargo, the sinking of one of our ships in 1941, the Falklands mess in the 80's, and the Fast and Furious fiasco. To name a few.
Mexicans never forget and never forgive.
So yeah, though it's in everyone's best interest to accept the help and deal with the cartels now, the Mexican president who accepted such help would be seen as a pariah and their party would lose support among the population. For obvious reasons, no one is willing to take such a risk.
In short, Mexico believed the US should have sided with Argentina because of the Rio Treaty. Since the US didn't (for obvious reasons)note , Mexico used that as "proof" that the treaty was a failure AND when the US invoked it after 9/11, the Mexican government argued that the treaty was created to serve only the US with no regard for the other countries in the continent(s) and they refused to help in Irak, and they even withdrew from the treaty.
Ahem... my country can be really petty.
The Mexico trip was a win for Trump, as it was a loss for Nieto. It accomplished nothing other than being an photo op and ego boost for Trump, and Nieto fell for it. The immigration speech hours later further proved how irrelevant the venture was, beyond showing again how Trump does know how to pretend to be nice.
The speech more or less killed any good will that our least favourite orangutan had gotten from the trip.
A look at all the BS that's been said about the Clinton Foundation
.

If the US tried to intervene in Mexico they would need to get the Mexican government's permission first or else be accused of big-stick imperialism no matter how good the outcome. And apparently the Mexican government has refused it, so the US can't (legally) do anything about it even if they want to because the backlash wouldn't be worth it.

I'll hazard to say that Johnson would pull more voters from Trump. Despite (or perhaps due to) being a Libertarian, Johnson is more traditionally conservative than Trump. He'd be the safer choice for the mainstream right. It's true that he's relatively strong on social liberalism, but he's financially conservative.
