The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Libertarianism, at its most basic, is "government should be as large as it needs to be and no larger", which isn't a bad thing in and of itself.

What a useless definition. Everyone wants the government to be as large as it needs to be. What we disagree on is how large the government needs to be.

There aren't any parties pushing the "Make the government needlessly huge for funsies" platform.

Personally, I consistently refused to say the Pledge largely because, A, the law says that I don't have to, and B, neither my mother nor my teachers gave a flying fuck about the law in that case - therefore, sticking to my guns was a cheap way to pick a fight that wouldn't actually get me in trouble.

Or to stick to the status quo out of a belief that change may make things (even) worse.

[up]Incredibly creepy. I always assumed that's the kind of thing you'd only see in some backwater private school and North Korea, but apparently it's a thing across the entire USA.

It's not all of the USA. I'd never even heard of the practice until I was an adult. I mean, it's not a federal law or anything.

Pretty much that. It's about priorities. The liberal's top priority is "the government should try to make things better", the conservative's top priority is "the government should make sure not to make things worse", and the libertarian's top priority is "the government should impose on its citizens as little as possible".

If a government policy might improve things for some people but expands government power in some way, a liberal would support it but a libertarian would oppose it. If a government policy would limit government power but might upset the status quo, a libertarian would support it but a conservative would oppose it. Etc.

Debbie won her primary, and I'm sitting back taking in all the salt from the Bernie Bros.

I don't like her, but I'll be dammed if I'm not glad she won as one last fuck you to the far-left.

I think it might be that the schools or districts can sort of set the priority precedent on the pledge of allegiance? I mean, I don't even remember doing it all that often in high school, and honestly my memory of middle and elementary are muddled enough I'm not sure I did it every day in those grades either. And I live in Texas.

[up]You are way to obsessed with hating on Bernie Sanders and his supporters. It got annoying a long time ago. Bernie bros aren't even that big a problem, demographically speaking.

Rubio win his primary, too. Though weren't we at one point under the impression Rubio wanted out after he lost the Presidential primary?

Also Sheriff Joe and McCain in Arizona won their own reelection primaries.

When did I mention Sanders? I've said multiple times he did good with his endorsement and DNC speech.

But that still doesn't change the fact that he's legitimately opened the door for a Tea Party left to rise up. Now whether or not they'll be ultimately successful is doubtful, especially considering the current failures of his "revolution" in Congressional seats taking off, but, a year ago, such a possibility was so far remote, it wasn't even entertained.

Hillary is already going to be going into Pennsylvania avenue practically already at war with Congress, she didn't need to be attacked by her own party, especially when the vast majority of the attacks are straight up, bullshit.

I don't think Sanders supporters are on the far left, per-se. Rather, they're just disillusioned and angry while also being leftish and they latched onto the first convenient candidate.

[up][up] There is a reason why both the Left and the Right are pissed off at the Establishment right now. How does the more moderate left deal with the mere fact that the more moderate right has disappeared and been replaced with a far-right that is completely unwilling to compromise? Clinton's not going to get a damn thing done outside of Executive Orders as long as the Republicans control Congress and refuse to compromise.

Meh. They aren't likely to control both houses next year. Senate is more and more likely to be gone from GOP control. Very reduced majority in the house too.

He said during his presidential bid that he wasn't going to seek reelection to his senate seat if he didn't get the nomination... until didn't get the nomination and decided that he was going to run for reelection to the Senate. Way to show the country how much your promises are worth, Rubio.

The Democrat who won the primary is Patrick Murphy, the Representative who beat Allen West (Tea Party nutjob extraordinaire) in 2012. Murphy's actually a former Republican who jumped ship after the Tea Party started taking control, but he never ran for office as a Republican. He beat Alan Grayson, another Representative who was rather well-liked for being something of a firebrand, until it came out that he has an arrest record for domestic violence. I voted for Murphy in the primary, myself, but I'm not particularly confident that he'll be able to beat Rubio. We'll see what happens. (Random fun fact, Murphy lives in my hometown: Jupiter, Florida.)

Tactical, that comment wasn't referring to just that one post. You have a consistent pattern of complaining about Sanders as well as his more strident supporters. I think you're pretty consistently making a bigger deal of it than it is. "Bernie bros" are not the leftist version of the Tea Party. For one, they're not doing anything to translate that general support into votes the way the Tea Party did. Which is probably the biggest difference. The farther left just isn't that big, or that motivated to vote. You keep moaning on about how the party is going to get hijacked but your speculation and your annoyance is out of proportion to what's actually happening.

For one thing, we don't have a bunch of people on the far left running for office and trying to knock out other Democrats and moderate Republicans, which was a large part of how the Tea Party got into power. For another, for all that there are people calling out the Democratic party, the ones who are voting are generally voting for Clinton and other establishment candidates. We're not going to get a sudden hijacking of the party this cycle, and I very much doubt that it will happen in the next cycle.

I donated to Tim Canova, but I'm not surprised DWS won — national politics and local politics aren't the same, and DWS evidently brings home the bacon for her constituents. Also, Bernie's ground game in Florida wasn't great, so a hanger-on like Canova wouldn't have an easy time benefiting.
