Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

This. I'm on the fence about legalizing it, but no matter how you slice it, the black market doesn't vanish just because of legalization. Not least because for a not-insignificant portion of the clientele the chance to abuse the women, or have sex with minors, or have unprotected sex in a dangerous situation, or what have you, is the attraction.
The jury's out on whether legalization decreases the number of people brought in as slaves or not. Barring clear evidence that legalization (and not mere decriminalization) reduces human trafficking, decriminalization should be the policy goal. The people who buy still get fined/go to jail but the women who sell have recourse to change their lifestyle without fear of jail.
Legalising prostitution would make it easier for sex workers to seek legal help. Bit unsure on whether they can count on getting help from the police, though.
Yep, Trump supporters are making Latino sock puppet accounts

So...basically their plan from day 1 for Obama?
New Survey coming this weekend!> Prostitution should be legalized for the same basic reasons that casual drug use should be legalized: people will do it whether you allow it or not,
Obviously while keeping all the other forms of prostitution illegal, because people (the fucked up in the head kind) would argue that all forms of Prostitution should legal,
have a listen and have a link to my discord server
I think you misread him. He said "no matter where you go in the First World where prostitution is illegal" — ie, he was talking about the parts of the first world where prostitution hasn't been legalized, not saying that prostitution is illegal in all parts of the first world.
Stein is not only batshit crazy, but has some diet racism to boot.
New Survey coming this weekend!Just subsidize registered prostitutes to undercut the black market.
More to the point, there is evidence to show that most people seeking out sex workers will choose legal venues if given the opportunity, even if they could get it cheaper on the black market. Heck, there were times in my life where I might have done so, had I not been afraid of getting arrested or catching a disease.
You'll always find black market pimps selling child sex and other immoral/illegal things, but that would happen regardless of the legal status of consenting adult prostitution.

used to do that in the Middle Ages in small municipalities.
It was considered a public service.
Man, between the antics of Jill Stein (and some research about a few groups in Europe) and the experiences of my internship (which has pulled me towards the political center on economics/defense), I think I hate the far-left as much as I do the far-right now.
Of course, the far-right is obviously more dangerous at the moment.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Oh lord...
Rapper Ice Cube endorses Donald Trump.
Or does he....
He doesn't.
