The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I makes sense if you buy into Trump's premise that the main source of crime in America is people from Latin America and the Middle East coming to the country and wrecking stuff. What he's saying is, hey, black people are victims of crime, too, so they must support kicking all those "criminals" out of the country.

  • Tweet asking for more gun control after someone related to a NBA player gets shot, Trump says this is the reason why black people will vote for him. Pretty much implying gun control is something he'd do.

  • Trump keeps yapping about he will never tough the second A ever to the rabid share of the gun owners.

Is Trump trying to lose another voterbase?

In addition to a previous history with domestic violence Trump's new campaign CEO, Steve Bannon, has made anti-Semitic remarks. While this is his ex-wife we are talking about, so she's hardly unbiased, I'm not sure if this is a case of poor vetting or not caring on Trump's part.

It's not about what her day/night job is, but rather the implications of her day/night job.
Uh, no. Most of the criticism about Melania is focused on "OMG she was a prostitute!!!1!" If it was about the hypocrisy of the immigration stance, or family values, or what, then I wouldn't be as upset about it.
ethical concerns aside, escort work is generally illegal in the US
And the legality of it hasn't been questioned in anything I've seen.

[up][up]There is a belief that the first lady has to be a woman of class. You may not agree with the sentiment, but it is a widely held belief.

[up][up]Reframing slut-shaming doesn't stop it from being slut-shaming. And it needs to be called out. Like "the president has to be a man of white skin". Just because it is a widely held belief, doesn't means it has any validity.

Except this isn't the same thing. Standards are a thing, particularly for public office. There is a reason when a politician is caught in hypocrisy (or even not hypocrisy but still "uncouth" behavior) they are ruined.

I wouldn't call it slut-shaming per se but it definitely is a question of class. I don't know what you call it but there's quite a few examples of prejudice against people who are not "prestigious" enough for something. It's why you can't show tattoos at a lot of work places and why some restaurants have dress codes.

Eh, either way, it's kind of a dick move to go after the family of the candidates. If someone attacked Hillary's daughter, I'd find it incredibly low. The family isn't on trial, the candidate is.

I'd argue that demanding people in positions of leadership have some class is not too much to ask. Indeed, this is a major argument I'd make against Trump-he has absolutely zero class whatsoever.

Going after Trump's family is a bit of a dick move, though.

It is quite the dick move to go after family. But Trump opened that Pandora's box by going after Bill, so he declared it open season on his wife.

Seriously, "classy" is one of those super-broad terms where the meaning depends on the circumstances and time period, making it basically meaningless. Not gloating over beating your friends at a video game is classy. Wearing a well-fitting dress with the right amount of makeup is classy. Holding the door open for your girlfriend is note  classy. You get the idea.

[up]It's not at all meaningless. Classy amounts to "considerate and elegant". See Dim and Dash for a series of obvious contrast examples.

Going after a candidate's spouse or adult kids is fair game if they are campaigning with them explicitly (giving talking points, etc) and you are responding to their assertions. Anything else, like people going after Ann Romney for having "too many" children or Rush Limbaugh calling Chelsea Clinton a dog in the 90s, is a cheap shot (at best).
