Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

One of the chief problems, Sykes said, was that it had become impossible to prove to listeners that Trump was telling falsehoods because over the past several decades the conservative news media had “basically eliminated any of the referees, the gatekeepers.”
“There's nobody,” he lamented. “Let's say that Donald Trump basically makes whatever you want to say, whatever claim he wants to make. And everybody knows it's a falsehood. The big question of my audience, it is impossible for me to say that, 'By the way, you know it's false.' And they'll say, ‘Why? I saw it on Allen B. West.' Or they'll say, 'I saw it on a Facebook page.' And I'll say, 'The New York Times did a fact check.' And they'll say, 'Oh, that's The New York Times. That's bulls—-.’ There's nobody — you can't go to anybody and say, 'Look, here are the facts.’”
“And I have to say that's one of the disorienting realities of this political year. You can be in this alternative media reality and there's no way to break through it," Sykes continued. "And I swim up stream because if I don't say these things from some of these websites, then suddenly I have sold out. Then they'll ask what's wrong with me for not repeating these stories that I know not to be true.”
Heyyy, a conservative complaining about the right living in an alternative media reality? I see that nonsense with my brother, who has an Alex Jones app on his tablet, reads the Washington Times, and supports the manosphere. He lives in his own little world, and he acts like he's an expert.
In the meantime, I saw a headline from Fox News saying that Clinton's "alt-right" speech is tired old nonsense. Looks like someone's trying to deny there is a problem.
When Fox news are saying something is nonsense, chances are it isn't.
The meme is love, the meme is life. Go check out my youtube channel. :) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5XjInl2Il9SGEQbyyU0djAHe did say Trump has no problems he knows about. It mostly only looks bad because of the conspiracy his campaign were raising about Hillary's health.

Maine Governor Paul LePage leaves a slightly heated message to a critic and demands he publish it.
Additionally, he later told reporters that he wished to have the man murdered.
I'm pretty happy with the alt-right getting some light shone on it. With any luck when Trump gets dumped the stinking lot with be tossed into the dustbin with him.
It's kinda weird hearing so many people in this thread having no idea what the manosphere/alt-right was until hillary talked about it. They've been an active presence on the internet shitting it up for awhile now and have a lot of crossover with the-hashtag-that-shall-not-be-named-because-fighteer-reads-this.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?Incidentally, the Breitbart version of the headline is "Kaine Plays Race Card to Black College Audience".
One thing I fear in this that could potentially backfire on the Clinton campaign, didn't the "birther" phenomenon originate from Clinton's 2008 campaign against Obama and Trump just ran with it, or am I misremembering?
Also saw "Tim Kaine TRYS TO Link Trump to ' Ku Klux Klan Values '" for a site called freerepublic.com, which my inner grammar nazi found amusing.

It was started specifically by "democrats" of the puma pac founder "The undisputed queen of the PUM As, Murphy is the founder and owner of PUMA PAC. She is a "lifelong Democrat," except for 2000 when she donated money to John Mc Cain (and only John Mc Cain)[3] and voted in the Republican primary.[4] Of course, there's no reason to suspect foul play based on this alone, but Murphy's repeated failure to file a report with the FEC seems a bit suspicious.[5]"
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?I remember during the 2008 campaign Clinton was getting flack because, when asked about either the false rumours that Obama was a Muslim or that he was born outside the US, she said "I have no reason to think he is" (or something along those lines) rather than denying it outright.

Watching a documentary on the U.S. Presidential Election of 1964... AKA LBJ Vs. Goldwater, and it is clear that this election is pretty much a repeat of Johnson Vs. Goldwater. It seems like the only difference is the lack of a Reagan figure for the Alt-Right to rally behind after Trump loses the election who can win the election a decade down the road.

Wizard Needs Food BadlyThat's a little unfair to Goldwater. Yes, he was a disgusting opportunist when it came to civil rights, his foreign policy was crazy, and his economic platform was pure voodoo. But the man was decades ahead of his time on gay rights, and he did warn about the rise of the religious right.
Trump has nothing positive in his corner. At least Goldwater told those on his (relative) right-wing to piss off.
However the same line does work for both them: In your guts, you know he's nuts.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.
I will admit that it was more of a generalization... Goldwater had some lines that he wouldn't cross.
I'm kind of glad Trump got the nomination, and not just because it'd be an easy win for Hilldawg, but this kind of racism and bigotry has been flying under the radar far too damn long.
It needed to be exposed for all to see so we can at least begin the process of stamping it out.
Which is why I believe Hillary winning over Obama in 08 wouldn't have the GOP on a near extinction event as it is, now. His election really brought out all the racists.

New Survey coming this weekend!Really? In what way?
Oh God! Natural light!

I was about to link to that very same article!
These Republicans have effectively been exiled from the conservative news media, leaving them with a problem.
“They don't have any place to go. How else do you get your message out? You can't do it in the mainstream. This is the way you reach conservatives,” Ziegler said. “We have taught conservatives for many years to trust nothing other than what they hear in conservative media. Yet the conservative media has now proven to be untrustworthy.”
“You have to go to the old mainstream media and at the end of the day, you will be the only reasonable, rational conservative standing,” Sykes suggested. “That would be the best case scenario.”
They created their very own problem. Can't say I feel too sorry for them. I really hope a splintered conservative movement allows liberal ideas to flourish for at least a few years.
