The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Certainly not in Detroit, which has lost its fundamental reason for existence and is now an economic disaster zone. How an "independent Michigan" would solve that particular problem is beyond me, since it would be fiscally constrained in ways that a larger federal government is not.

I think secession is a bit too much. It might seems simple, but it's harder and messier than it looks. You have to gather support from foreign nations to recognize your independence, you have to deal with national borders and citizenship, you have to make your own currency that will obviously wreck your economy, and so on. Not worth it unless the current president of America is Bloodreaver Deathmaster the third.

Yeah, we do suck as a state.

The Province of Michigan actually doesn't sound that bad. Would you help us clean up Detroit?

On a serious note, there has been speculation that America could descend into civil war because of this election. No matter how ridiculous that sounds, tensions in America have been getting worse. Shootings, racial tensions, immigration.....

Who knows? Either it will be a civil war, or it won't. Simple as that.

I'll probably end up voting third party.

Why third party? You still haven't explained how both options are equally bad.

Oh really when?

Civil war is unlikely. Mass protests are likely though. And because Trump is claiming that fraud id the onlu way he can lose, some of his supporters might get violent.

Said supporters would then be crushed by the authorities.

no access to the sea.

Umm, have you looked at a map recently? Michigan, okay I'll give you that one. They'd have to go through the Great Lakes and up the St. Lawrence river or down the Lake Champlain shortcut. But Texas is right on the Gulf of Mexico, and Galveston is a major port city...

And with regards to Detroit, I guess the Canadian Army could use some practice. Gotta keep the troops sharp and overseas stuff is expensive.

Either it will be a civil war, or it won't

That's... really not a good argument.

Like

Either the sun will explode or it won't.

Either zombie apocalypse will happen or it won't.

Either alien invasion will happen or it won't.

[up][up] Okay, i guess I never get top mark in US geography. Yes, Texas does have access to the sea, whether the sea is recognized as Texas' is up to the air.

If Texas was internationally or at least regionally recognized by other countries, it would have access to the ocean under international law.

Can someone explain to me how Hillary's few bone headed comments and somehow equal to Trump's proto-fascist platform and constant bombardment of bigotry and hatred? Like yeah Clinton has said some silly things, I'd estimate maybe a dozen or so, and? A dozen or so silly things is not equal to Trump, it's not even close.

Hell I doubt there's a third party candidate that hasn't said more insanely stupid things than Clinton has.

Clinton said that women and children are the main victiems of war, the Green Party are pacifists, flip flopping pro-Brexiters and Anti-Vaxers, the Libertarians hate the UN even though it's a big part of why we haven't had a Third World War.

I'd take Clinton's mild sillyness over the idiocy of third parties any day.

Still if you've got an argument for why a third party candidate is better than Clinton I'm all ears.

Here are some quotes that back up my stance that Hillary might not be as good a choice as she thinks she is.

"I'm not going to have some reporters pawing through our papers. We are the president."

....we?....No, seriously, what is she saying here?

"Every nation has to either be with us, or against us. Those who harbor terrorists, or who finance them, are going to pay a price."

Every nation? All of them? Does this include nations like, oh, I don't know....Switzerland? Our love-hate buddies, Pakistan? Seriously, a policy like that sounds like such a bad idea, Ceresi Lannister would be proud. That is a sure-fire way to come across as a bully from the perspective of every other nation on the planet.

"I have said publicly no option should be off the table, but I would certainly take nuclear weapons off the table."

Sure, do that. I'm sure Putin is just as understanding and idealistic as you are. Let's ignore that the threat of nuclear warfare stopped humanity as a species from destroying ourselves several times over?

Nukes are a beautiful paradox. We never should have had them, but we do, and the only way to make sure nobody uses them is threaten to use them right back.

If you take nukes off the table, even if you have them, you weaken your position a lot. If the other guy has nukes, they can use it against you, knowing that there is no fear of retaliation.

Can we get some context on those quotes please? Especially the nuke one.

[up]I have a feeling Clinton might have been talking about adopting a no first strike policy, which has been suggested a few times over the past few decades. But I know for a goddamn fact that Clinton isn't in favor of unilateral nuclear disarmament.

The nuke quote seems to go back to 2007, when she primaried against Obama.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/09/us/politics/10cnd-clinton.html

The "Every nation" quot also seems to date back to 2007, but I can't yet find a specific story about it.

The "We are the president" has some discussion going on Snopes' message boards, allegedly dating back to '96 and attributed to one man's book.

....we?....No, seriously, what is she saying here

That the press are assholes and she's not going to give them unlimited access just because. Sounds pretty good to me.

Every nation? All of them? Does this include nations like, oh, I don't know....Switzerland? Our love-hate buddies, Pakistan?

Assuming that hat she wasn't just trying to sound though. Yeah it includes the Swiss, who are hiding and terrorists, so that makes them our freinds. As for Pakistan, I mean I'd say she's exagerating for effect and that Pakistan will get a pass because the goverment is st least normally opposed to terrorism, but if she were to crack down on Pakistan, how would that be a bad thing?

The statement would come across as bullying if it was about forign policy in general, but it's not, it's about the specific act of harbouring and supporting terrorists currently at war with the US.

Sure, do that.

Seeing as Clinton has not called for the US to disarm it's nukes unilaterally the quote is clearly about a specific situation, (I'd guess Iran, but I could be wrong), it's perfectly legitimate and a good idea to take nukes off the table for certain situations. That's why the US didn't nukes China during the Korean War, it's why nobody launched nukes over Ukraine, it's a ballencing act.
